Job Description

  1. Laboratory Research. The human brain contains ~100 billion neurons, and ~100+ trillion synaptic connections, and is unrivaled in its information processing complexity. This complexity arises at a cost, however, as it also underscores brain hyper-sensitivity to acquired brain injury including Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). These injuries present at a range of ages, span demographics, and represent severe health concerns. Individuals who experience Stroke or TBI may have chronic impairments in memory, sensory and motor systems. Our laboratory discovers and targets brain repair mechanisms (post-Stroke & post-TBI) to maximize behavioral recovery in months following insult. For these goals, we heavily invest in optimizing rehabilitative training, pharmacological targeting and electrical stimulation parameters to enhance endogenous repair mechanisms. In addition to testing new therapies, we provide novel basic science understanding of the mechanisms for post-Stroke & post-TBI impairment as brain injury is combinatorial remodeling biology that spans subcellular-to-cell macro-system domains in ways that dictate responsiveness to treatment. Our two brain regions of interest include motor cortex and hippocampal dentate gyrus.
  2. Laboratory Information. Our laboratory is a vibrant forward-thinking environment of individuals dedicated to treating Stroke and TBI injuries. Collaboration both within the laboratory and on an inter-laboratory basis is an essential component of our working model. We observe best laboratory practices and seek to produce impactful high-quality data at all times. The skillsets acquired in this training environment are fundamental to cellular testing within biomedical science. This positive working environment is designed to help individuals pursue their professional goals while providing significant effort to scientific discovery.
  3. Job Duties. Specific duties are project-specific and thus generated as a discussion between team leader, Dr. Jeffery Boychuk, and applicant. It is expected that each applicant is given extensive training regarding the appropriate techniques for their projects to enhance, and expand upon, their existing skillsets.
