Job Summary

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) for UCSF Health Saint Francis and St. Mary's Hospitals is responsible for the day-to-day administrative and operational management of the hospitals. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the COO ensures the efficient delivery of high-quality patient care while aligning hospital operations with UCSF Health's overall strategic goals. The COO plays a critical role in driving operational excellence, optimizing performance, improving patient satisfaction, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations. Key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing daily hospital operations, ensuring that both clinical and non-clinical departments function efficiently and deliver high-quality care.
  • Providing administrative and operational oversight across several clinical departments, including medical, diagnostic, and therapeutic services.
  • Developing and reviewing the hospitals' budget, ensuring that financial resources are allocated efficiently and in line with operational priorities.
  • Evaluating the performance of key departments and management personnel to ensure that organizational goals are being met.
  • Ensuring that hospital operations comply with all healthcare regulations, including state, federal, and accrediting body requirements.
  • Assessing and responding to requests for new or expanded services, ensuring they align with hospital capabilities and community needs.
  • Overseeing and directing the activities of clinical professional services departments, ensuring operational and financial performance meet expectations.
  • Leading initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care, improving service quality, and driving operational improvements.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $204,600 - $497,600 (Annual Rate).

In August 2024, UCSF Health expanded its Community Hospital Division by acquiring UCSF Health Saint Francis Hospital (SFH) and UCSF Health St. Mary's Hospital (SMH). SFH, located in downtown San Francisco, serves a diverse urban population and houses specialty facilities such as the Bothin Burn Center, Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute, and Center for Pain Management. SMH, near Golden Gate Park, offers services such as a cardiac catheterization lab, adolescent psychiatry, the Sister Mary Philippa Clinic, and an acute rehabilitation program. Together, these hospitals, with over 550 licensed beds, and the Community Hospital Division are vital to providing care for San Francisco's vulnerable populations.

The COO will be responsible for ensuring that the hospitals operate efficiently and effectively, delivering high-quality care to patients while aligning with strategic goals. Additionally, this role is critical to maintaining operational excellence and fostering a patient-centered environment that consistently meets the needs of the community.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in business, health administration or clinical degree and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Extensive executive management experience in a complex health care organization.
  • Expert knowledge of health care delivery models, business and strategic planning, financial management, program development implementation and organizational development.
  • Highly advanced ability to work collaboratively and effectively with medical center executives, campus leadership, external agencies, and other academic medical centers and healthcare institutions.
  • Expert ability to establish and utilize metrics to drive excellence, support operations and facilitate integration.
  • Expert knowledge of capital and operating budget development and management, financial analysis, and reporting techniques.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly advanced interpersonal skills.
  • Expert negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Highly advanced ability to build and maintain a climate of trust that inspires commitment to achieve organization goals.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's Degree in business, health administration or clinical degree preferred.
