Purpose of Position:

Del Monte Foods is the Foods Division of Fresh Del Monte, a global grower, producer and marketer of fresh, value-added, and shelf-stable produce. Del Monte Foods has a powerful portfolio of brands, including the iconic Del Monte, Contadina and S&W. We are currently seeking a Canning Crewleader.

The Canning Crewleader provides frontline operational and technical leadership within the Canning Department to support safe, reliable, and efficient production. This position performs skilled maintenance, troubleshooting, adjustment, and repair of canning equipment while providing day-to-day work direction and training to seasonal employees. The role is responsible for supporting equipment reliability, maintaining product flow, and ensuring work is performed in accordance with established safety, food safety, quality, Product Certification, and operational requirements.

Performance is measured through safe work execution, equipment reliability and uptime, timely response to mechanical issues, product quality, adherence to production requirements, and effective coordination and training of assigned employees.

Accountabilities:

Equipment Maintenance & Reliability

  • Perform skilled maintenance, troubleshooting, adjustment, and repair of canning room machinery and equipment.
  • Maintain and repair seamers, fillers, crate loaders, slicers, seed reels, add-water systems, and associated canning equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical equipment issues and complete appropriate repairs or adjustments to restore proper operation.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance activities as assigned to support equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
  • Inspect equipment condition and identify developing mechanical issues before they result in equipment failure or production interruption.
  • Utilize hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and torch-cutting equipment as required.
  • Apply working knowledge of mechanical, basic electrical, and hydraulic systems when troubleshooting equipment.
  • Support equipment setup, adjustment, changeover, startup, and shutdown activities as required.
  • Communicate significant equipment conditions, repair needs, and recurring issues to the appropriate supervisor or maintenance personnel.

Canning Operations & Production Support

  • Monitor canning equipment and operating conditions to maintain safe and efficient product flow.
  • Respond to equipment issues and production interruptions and coordinate corrective action within the scope of the position.
  • Work closely with production, maintenance, Quality, and other plant personnel to minimize downtime and maintain operational requirements.
  • Verify equipment is operating properly following maintenance, repair, or adjustment activities.
  • Support production activities throughout the canning area as necessary to maintain workflow and schedule attainment.
  • Identify operational or equipment-related issues affecting productivity, quality, or reliability and escalate concerns when appropriate.

Crew Leadership & Training

  • Provide day-to-day work direction and frontline leadership to seasonal employees assigned to the Canning Department.
  • Coordinate employee activities and work assignments based on production and operational requirements.
  • Train employees on assigned job duties, equipment operation, safe work practices, and established operating procedures.
  • Monitor work activities and reinforce expectations for safety, food safety, quality, productivity, and housekeeping.
  • Provide hands-on technical and operational support to employees when needed.
  • Communicate employee, staffing, operational, or performance concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Promote effective communication, teamwork, and accountability within the assigned work area.

Safety, Food Safety & Quality

  • Follow and reinforce all company safety policies, procedures, GMPs, food safety, and quality requirements.
  • Perform applicable responsibilities under the Product Certification Program and ensure required procedures are followed.
  • Follow lockout/tagout requirements when servicing, troubleshooting, or repairing equipment.
  • Ensure required PPE is properly used and employees follow established safe work practices.
  • Maintain awareness of moving machinery, pinch points, hot surfaces, elevated work areas, and other hazards associated with canning operations.
  • Identify and immediately report unsafe conditions, equipment hazards, injuries, near misses, food safety concerns, and product quality issues.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas and support established housekeeping requirements.

Minimum Skills Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot, maintain, adjust, and repair industrial production equipment.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical systems with basic knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to safely use a wide variety of hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, and precision measuring devices, including micrometers.
  • Ability to provide day-to-day work direction, training, and operational guidance to seasonal employees.
  • Ability to organize work activities and coordinate employees based on production and operational priorities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work effectively with employees, supervisors, Maintenance, Quality, and other plant personnel.
  • Basic mathematical and computer skills necessary to perform assigned responsibilities.
  • Ability to understand and follow established safety, food safety, quality, Product Certification, and operational procedures.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while recognizing when issues require escalation.
  • Ability to work rotating day/night shifts, overtime, weekends, and extended schedules based on production requirements.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain applicable safety and equipment training/certifications required for the position.
  • Previous industrial maintenance or food manufacturing experience.
  • Previous experience maintaining and troubleshooting canning, packaging, or food-processing equipment.
  • Previous lead worker or employee training experience.
  • Machining skills or formal machinist training.
  • Experience with computerized maintenance or production systems.
  • Experience supporting preventative maintenance and equipment reliability programs.
  • Post-high-school mechanical training or equivalent combination of technical training and relevant industrial maintenance experience.
  • Welding and torch-cutting experience.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, technical training, and relevant industrial maintenance or manufacturing experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
