The Assistant Custodial Supervisor for Housing reports directly to the Assistant Director of Residential Custodial Services. This position provides direct supervision to custodial staff who perform daily cleaning activities in residential buildings. The incumbent is responsible for delegating work from the Assistant Director of Residential Custodial Services and directing work activities of the custodial staff. The incumbent is also responsible for providing appropriate skills, equipment, and safety training. In addition, the Assistant Custodial Supervisor is responsible for performing cleaning activities as a custodial team member. This position requires the use of operating work issued vehicles.
Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m with the potential for rotating weekends.

Job Description
50% - Custodial Services, Supervision and Administrative
- Assists the Assistant Director of Residential Custodial Services in planning, coordinating, and directing the daily work of custodial staff to ensure cleanliness standards, safety requirements, and service expectations are consistently met.
- Provides direct and routine supervision of custodial staff, including assigning work, monitoring workloads, tracking progress, and ensuring established schedules, procedures, and performance standards are followed.
- Conducts routine inspections of assigned areas to evaluate service quality, identify deficiencies, and ensure timely corrective action is taken.
- Identifies training needs and reinforces proper cleaning techniques, equipment operation, and safety practices; communicates employee progress and operational concerns to the Assistant Director of Residential Custodial Services.
- In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Residential Custodial Services, meets with staff to communicate work expectations, operational updates, equipment-related issues, staff development opportunities, and responses to unusual or emergent situations.
- Evaluate employee performance and provides coaching and feedback related to work habits attendance, productivity, and quality of work.
- Maintains regular communication with custodial staff to support daily operations, resolve issues, and promote effective working relationships.
- Assists the Assistant Director of Residential Custodial Services with administrative functions, including reviewing time and labor records, monitoring attendance, supporting absence management, and tracking leave requests in accordance with departmental and university policies.
- Transports staff, equipment, and supplies as needed to residential housing locations.
- Maintains accurate documentation related to staffing, inspections, performance observations, attendance, and work assignments.
- Uses computerized systems (e.g. Peoplesoft, MAXIMO, and Microsoft Office applications) to support scheduling, reporting, record keeping and operational communication.
40% - Custodial Duties
- Performs daily custodial work as an active member of the residential custodial team to maintain assigned areas at established cleanliness standards.
- Duties include vacuuming, dry and wet mopping; stripping and burnishing floors; emptying trash and recycling; cleaning, dusting, and polishing surfaces; and cleaning and disinfecting restroom fixtures and surfaces, including sinks, toilets, urinals, sanitary napkin receptacles, and shower stalls.
- Inspects, cleans, and maintains entrances and exterior building areas, including removal of debris, snow, and ice and applying surface treatments as required.
- Provides additional custodial services as needed in response to staffing shortages, absences, or operational priorities.
- Supports snow removal and inclement weather response efforts to maintain safe and accessible facilities.
10% - Performs other related work as assigned
- Follow safety policies regarding use of supplies, tools and equipment.
- Performs other duties related to cleaning or maintenance as needed including working at similar tasks in another facility to cover for absent staff or extra staffing needs.
- Assist Custodial staff as needed with moving appliances in and out of halls as directed, to clean.
- Reports and turns-in lost items to appropriate persons.
- Receive any suspicious incident or persons reports and report to KUPD or Complex DIrector staff.
- Participates in training sessions and in-service classes or workshops.
Position Requirements
- Lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds frequently.
- Lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds occasionally, with or without accomodation.
- Bend, stoop and/or kneel frequently.
- Work on step ladders.
- Physical strength sufficient to stand the strain of working long hours at custodial tasks.
- Willingness to work overtime as needed.
- Work under a variety of extreme temperature and weather.
- A valid driver's license by the time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or completion of GED equivalency.
- 3 years of custodial experience.
- Lead worker or supervisory experience OR a KU leadership course (STEP), Aspiring Leaders, etc).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous custodial supervisory experience
- Previous experience in a college/university setting.
- Knowledge of and experience with the operation, use, and care of vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment.
- Experience interacting with customers and/or the public.
- Computer knowledge and skills sufficient to work in Microsoft Office Suite and various other sotware programs such as People Soft and MAXIMO.
