JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Penn State Performance Nutrition department is seeking a Performance Nutrition Fellow to support our Olympic sport programs. This fellowship is designed to provide hands-on experience in collegiate athletics while helping develop early-career practitioners into well-rounded sports nutrition professionals.

This position is supported by the Pennsylvania Pork Council and provides an opportunity to work within a high-performance, interdisciplinary environment focused on evidence-based practice and practical application.

The fellow will work alongside a collaborative staff of six Registered Dietitians (four Olympic, two Football) and our Director of Operations, gaining exposure to a variety of team environments and performance nutrition strategies.

Team & Athlete Support

  • Provide day-to-day nutrition support for assigned Olympic sport programs
  • Assist with individual nutrition consultations, team education sessions, and fueling strategies
  • Support hydration, recovery, and performance fueling initiatives during training and competition
  • Assist with team travel nutrition planning and competition fueling
  • Contribute to student-athlete onboarding and occasional recruiting support

Team assignments will be determined upon hire, with consideration given to candidate interest and experience.

Operations & Fueling

  • Support daily operation of fueling stations across Olympic sport facilities (inventory, stocking, organization)
  • Set up and support fueling for practices, lifts, and recovery (snacks, shakes, hydration)
  • Assist with coordinating team meals, catering, and dining logistics as needed
  • Assist with Greenberg Performance Kitchen operations

Education & Development

  • Create and deliver nutrition education content (digital, print, and in-person)
  • Assist with team talks, presentations, and informal education opportunities
  • Promote performance fueling strategies to enhance training, recovery, and competition outcomes

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Work within a multidisciplinary performance team (strength & conditioning, sports medicine, etc.)
  • Collaborate with performance nutrition staff across Olympic and Football programs
  • Assist with oversight of student workers or interns
  • Participate in staff meetings and ongoing program development

Part-time position with a flexible schedule. Registered Dietitian preferred; RD-eligible candidates will be considered with the expectation of obtaining the RD credential by August 1, 2026.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
