Overview

The High Tension team within Distribution Engineerings System Design department is seeking an energetic and highly motivated engineer to ensure the safe and reliable design, construction, maintenance and operation of the Con Edison electric system. The High Tension engineer will have the opportunity to build both traditional high tension service as well services attributed to meet Company and States clean energy goals. The High Tension engineer will have the opportunity to build both traditional high tension service as well as DER installations attributed to meet Company and States clean energy goals. System Design is responsible for overall system analysis, design, standards, high tension, renewable and distributed generation analysis and interconnections. The High Tension Team will also be responsible for technical analysis, standards, and special projects, that include pilot projects for equipment to be approved for first time use on the system. The ideal candidate is a self-starter that possesses a deep sense of personal accountability, is flexible, can manage multiple diverse projects with changing priorities, can render sound business decisions, and is an effective communicator. The candidate will have the opportunity to interact with several internal and external stakeholders, including Regional Engineering, Customer Engineering, Energy Services, System Operation (District Operations), Distribution Planning, CES, MTA and other critical customers, and developers in the Distributed Energy Resource space. Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Develop and determine the feasibility of electrical designs as well as applications of electrical facilities in the electric distribution system (30/60/90 design review) in accordance with EO-2022 and EO-10215. Develop and update Operation and Maintenance (O&M) specifications for High Tension services to support System Operation (District Operations), Regional Control Centers, and FOD departments. Develop First Amendments (as needed) for HT-DER installations detailing site specific requirements for import/export.
  • Develop, review, and maintain various engineering specifications, drawings, and technical documentation for internal and/or external stakeholders as required, as well as reviewing waiver requests. Ensure equipment designs and specifications comply with company standards including the Rulebook (General Instructions Governing Work on System Electrical Equipment), and applicable regulations and industry standards including IEEE, NESC, and ANSI. Remain up-to-date with advancement in technology and industry requirements.
  • Perform specific project assignments to support the design, upgrade, and maintenance of the Con Edison Distribution system. These tasks may require coordination with engineers, field employees, developers, and consultants for pilot programs or other special projects. This may include analysis, evaluating design proposals, engineering review, factory testing, and review of vendor testing results. Perform technical, economic and system analysis studies to determine the optimal design features for major components of the electrical system. Conduct engineering studies, including utilizing load flow tools (e.g. PVL, SINCAL, CYME) to analyze and propose potential solutions, technical guidance, and recommendations.
  • Perform contingency analysis of the high tension locations. This includes tasks such as review of relay protection settings and mobile generator relay analysis and support for Astoria Operations.
  • Read, understand, write technical papers, electrical schematics, protection and control systems, layouts, and other technical documentation.
  • Perform site visits and testing at customer locations to support safe interconnection of the customer site to the distribution system, improve specification compliance, support field testing of equipment, and to enhance understanding of the distribution system and distribution system equipment,.
  • Attend meetings with various departments, contractors, consultants, and representatives both internally and externally. Comfortable representing and presenting to internal stakeholders, various levels of management, internal and external customers, and developers
  • Perform other engineering or PSC mandated assignments and projects as required.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced dynamic environment, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and Minimum 3 years of related engineering work experience
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and Minimum 3 years of related engineering work experience Engineering (Regional, Customer, Generation, Substation), Relay Protection, Substation Operations, Generating Plants, Electric Operations field organizations, Control Center operations/support
Relevant Work Experience
  • Knowledge of substations, Underground Network and Overhead Electrical system, as well as knowledge of advanced electrical concepts, including power systems, required.
  • Work experience including technical knowledge of the Con Edison electrical system, experience in performing load flow, fault analysis, voltage regulation and/or relay coordination studies, required.
  • Ability to effectively interact with both internal and external customers, support staff and various levels of management, required.
  • Ability to interpret electrical diagrams, drawings, and customer site plans, required.
  • Ability to learn and gain understanding of high tension design, including equipment and relay protection requirements, required.
  • Possess knowledge and/or experience in the physical installation, maintenance, testing/evaluation/approval of electrical equipment, preferably to also including Field experience involving the electric distribution system or medium voltage switchgear, preferred.
  • Knowledge of electrical equipment and industry standards related to switchgear, preferred.
  • Experience writing Engineering specifications, Operating Procedures, performing root cause analysis, and issuing engineering reports, preferred.
  • Knowledge of distributed generation interconnection designs, preferred.

Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Field visits may require walking, ladder climbing, or manhole entry.
  • Position requires working in and out and around substations under construction and/or in service.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment as required, during visits to various work sites.
