Summary

The Solution Engineer will support advancement of NYPA's Asset Intelligence strategy by leading the implementation of nextgeneration, AIenabled digital technologies across the Generation and Transmission portfolio. This role blends domain expertise, program management, and stakeholder engagement to accelerate AI and Advanced Analytics initiatives, while also driving broader programs involving realtime IIoT sensors, digital transformation, and gridenhancing technologies.The engineer will conduct research, perform technical and economic analyses, and translate business priorities into actionable technology roadmaps, pilots, and enterprisescale deployments. Design and deliver use cases tailored to the Power & Utilities sector, including asset health and failure prediction, outage detection and restoration optimization, vegetation management analytics, predictive maintenance, operations optimization, and regulatory analytics.Success requires strong expertise in energysector fundamentals, AI and analytics platforms (Azure Foundry, Databricks, or similar), SCADA systems, sensors, network communications, gridenhancing technologies, and program/product management.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the identification, development, and strategic vision of smart grid and asset management technology projects aligned with NYPA's core business.
  • Conduct engineering research and analysis, presenting findings through economic analysis, white papers, and presentations.
  • Partner with Emerging Technologies strategy team and participate in key industry organizations.
  • Lead market and industry research to understand the state-of-art, and recommend innovative solutions to challenges facing the electric utility industry.
  • Work with internal teams and customers to define technical requirements and translate business needs into effective solutions.
  • Implement business operating models, including strategy, processes, vendor evaluation, tools, and performance metrics.
  • Assist with presentations to leadership and stakeholders on program justifications, technical benefits, and updates.
  • Identify market barriers and opportunities through analysis, research, and industry engagement.
  • Collaborate with product leads to translate complex utility industry requirements into implementable solutions.
  • Lead in-house design and engineering efforts, coordinating with IT and Operations Technology groups.
  • Support pilot projects and NYPA-wide rollouts, including integration plans and overseeing consultants and vendors.
  • Evaluate technical proposals, perform failure evaluations, and provide on-site support to NYPA facilities.
  • Assist with presentations to leadership and stakeholders on program justifications, technical benefits, and updates.
  • Conduct facility visits for design reviews, testing, and coordination with vendors.
  • Review and direct designs and specifications from engineering personnel.
  • Oversee development of equipment specifications and design packages, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • Provide ongoing support to NYPA facilities post-pilot and rollout, and facilitate training for station and site engineers.
  • Apply subject matter expertise to equipment engineering, industry standards, and technical compliance.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers.
  • Provide insights on industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes that may impact product development
  • For assigned work and projects, provide supervision of maintenance department(s) staff, and contractors, and prepare and monitor the day-to-day work activities of the crafts. Work with planners in scheduling work activities; oversee the safety of employees. Review job packages to ensure they are complete and current prior to performance of the work. Review completed work, job packages, and work orders to verify all steps are complete and to ensure that all data/information is recorded.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Deep understanding of the power system engineering, planning, and operations for electricity delivery system, transmission and distribution, grid equipment manufacturing and labor, and energy policy and markets.
  • Experience working with the strategy and business development teams to assess technology-driven business opportunities, and build business cases for handling of the most impactful technologies.
  • Strong background in R&D, Innovation, creation of pilot and proof of concept programs and measurement, and strategic thinking. Able to clearly articulate a vision and maturation path for a broad area of technology focus.
  • Knowledge in grid Enhancing Technologies including Dynamic Line Rating (DLR), Energy Storage Systems (ESS),Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs)
  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: Expertise in AI and machine learning techniques, including: Predictive Analytics, Demand Forecasting, Optimization Algorithms, Data Processing and Analysis
  • Experience with cybersecurity frameworks and standards (e.g., NERC CIP, ISO 27001).
  • Experience with following areas: Smart Grid, NERC CIP, renewable energy integration, and advanced data analytics, Cloud, Government security systems design and standards.
  • Proficiency in communication protocols (e.g., DNP3, Modbus, MQTT) and SCADA systems.
  • Knowledge and experience regarding the design and implementation of technology adoption roadmaps for electrical utilities
  • Background in SCADA systems, Protection & Control, Communication systems and innovative smart grid concepts/technologies.
  • Proven strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to independently lead a major work stream while coordinating with other team members to identify inter-work stream dependencies and risks, and develop and carry out mitigation steps.
  • Demonstrated stakeholder management and an ability to communicate solutions to multiple independent stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of Regional Transmission Operator/Independent System Operator market rules, business practices, and stakeholder procedures related to adoption, deployment, or valuation of new/emerging technologies.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering. Preferably in Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering.
  • Master of Science Degree in Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Working knowledge of electric utility practices.
  • New York State PE License preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 25% travel primarily within NY State.
  • Ability to travel to vendor facilities (worldwide) to support construction activities and to inspect equipment fabrication and commissioning for length of time needed.
  • Ability to travel to NYPA Facilities throughout NY State to support construction and scoping activities.
  • Valid NYS Driver's License.

The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates' relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
