Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The temporary advisor will provide academic advising and student support for participants in UNCW's Engineering 2+2 and 3+2 transfer pathway programs in partnership with North Carolina State University, while contributing to broader advising efforts within the College of Science and Engineering. Responsibilities include assisting students with course selection and registration, onboarding new students during orientation, monitoring academic progress toward transfer and degree requirements, interpreting transfer admission criteria, and reviewing degree plans to support timely progression.
The advisor will serve as the primary point of contact for approximately 150-200 engineering pathway students, ensuring continuity of advising services during a temporary leave period. This role emphasizes student success through proactive advising, accurate interpretation of academic policies, and consistent support throughout the student lifecycle.
The position will work closely with the Coordinator of Engineering Programs, CSE advising colleagues, and NC State partners to support student success and facilitate a seamless transition from UNCW to NC State engineering degree programs.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Student Affairs, or a closely related field with three years of progressive experience in academic advising, student support services, or a comparable area; or a Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Student Affairs, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience utilizing a range of software applications and educational technologies, including Microsoft Office Suite, learning management systems, and other technology-enhanced delivery platforms.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Master's degree with at least one year of advising or related experience working with students in a college setting.
  • Experience with and commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds (e.g., first-year, continuing, and transfer students; pre-professional students; adult learners, military students, on-campus and online students, students from historically underrepresented populations) and knowledge of issues of these student populations.
  • Knowledge of best practices and theoretical foundations in the fields of advising, adult learning, and student development.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to attend to details with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Demonstrated commitment to, and execution of, high-level customer service.
