Engine Controls Subject Matter Expert

The Subject Matter Expert in Engine Controls Development plays a critical role within the Engine Control Product Release Center (PRC). This expert works with the Controls Center of Excellence (COE) Manger, Controls Developers, Calibration, Advanced and Production Requirements teams to ensure all requirements are delivered by the Controls COE team function with the highest quality to meet program functional objectives. This role provides technical leadership to the PRC controls developers in the proper implementation of the controls requirements, including controls assessments and prototype/production controls & software development. The expert leads training in all aspects of engine control development. The Subject matter expert is the key participant for controls & software content planning & exceution as well issue investigations and resolution planning for the team.

Responsibilities includes but not limited to:



  • Read & Comprehend high level requirements related to the intended vehicle-level behavior
  • Design the appropriate control algorithm that fulfills the functional objectives
  • Implementation of the control algorithm in Matlab-Simulink, C, etc.
  • Provide best-guess calibration dataset
  • Pre-verification of the implementation, check of the requirements' compliance, through Model In The Loop (MIL) testing;
  • Pre-verification of the generated code, through Software in the Loop (SIL) testing or specific tools able to monitor the consumption of software resources.
  • Generation of integrated proto code builds
  • Verification of official code builds or proto code builds in the HIL lab or in the vehicle, using ETAS INCA tools;
  • Analysis and response to the tracked issues
  • Attendance to the main technical meetings, data analysis and issues' resolution
  • Process documentation development
  • Calibration & Application community support.



Fundamental knowledge Pillars:



  • Knowledge of modern and classical control principles
  • Knowledge of major vehicle systems
  • Domain knowledge in one or more of the following: Engine Design, Engine Systems Control Design, Engine Calibration, On-Board Diagnostics, functional safety
  • Embedded control development tools and processes
  • Support triage of issues, ensure correct COE and team members are assigned, assist in the root cause analysis
  • Perform Controls Assessments on COE content
  • Manage COE input to prototype software development
  • Provide Technical review and approval of Propulsion Capabilities
  • Review and approve artifacts created by other team members within the assigned COE
  • Manage special projects focused on quality of control artifacts


Basic Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in electrical, Mechanical, Computer Engineering or automotive related field
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in Gasoline engine controls development with strong knowledge of internal combustion engines
  • Excellant Knowledge of modern and classical control principles
  • Strong overall knowledge of vehicle and powertrain functions, engine & transmisison technologies, emissions & regulatory compliance standards, competitive products
  • Demonstrated experience in decomposing intended functions into controls design.
  • Minimum 8 years of Active hands on experience in the following


- Controls development in Matlab/Simulink auto-coding environment

- Autosar based software development

- Embedded C/C++

- ECU & Vehicle Data Analysis Tool usage (INCA/CANalyzer)

- Demonstrated technical problem solving

- Experience with engine controls modeling, simulation, development, validation & calibration

Outstanding interpersonal skills



  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment
  • Experience with Application Lifecycle Management (IBM RTC) tools
  • Knowledge of ASPICE processes for software development
  • Strong overall knowledge of CAN Protocol, Vehicle Electrical Network Architectures, Onboard Diagnostic &functional safety standards
  • Knowledge of proactive/reactive quality tools (DFSS, DFMEA, DVP&R, etc.)
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Critical character traits to ensure success: action-oriented mindset, ability to deal with ambiguity, customer focus, and strong problem-solving skills.



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Advanced degree with emphasis in Mechanical, Automotive, Electrical, Computer Engineering or related field
  • Strong interpersonal communication, Demonstrated Technical/leadership skills/experience
