Summary:

The Director, Scientific Communications is a fully integrated partner in the Scientific Communications Team within Clinical Affairs and collaborates across all functional teams within the organization. The Director will help lead development and execution of integrated plans and materials in support of evidence generation and data dissemination including scientific publications and clinical development for the Pacira BioSciences portfolio. Responsibilities include strategic plan development to support, communicate, and disseminate scientific information and messaging to and from internal teams, medical and scientific subject matter experts, and clinical investigators, and provide insight into the development of key scientific publications to ensure accurate and rigorous communication of data to inform the medical community. Team accountabilities include scientific messaging and content creation and management for internal and external communications to all audiences aligned with Pacira portfolio products, clinical trial materials, and clinical steering committees. The role also overseas financial and contractual aspects of projects with 3rd party scientific communication vendors and thought leader engagement.


Responsibilities

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by an individual assigned to this job. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Co-lead (along with medical lead(s) the evidence generation and data dissemination sub-committee(s). A cross-functional strategic alignment team for products (inline and pipeline assigned products).
  • Contributes strategic input into scientific engagement plans that include but are not limited to functional strategy, gap and competitor analysis, scientific data dissemination, clinical trial support materials, clinical steering committee planning and execution, and publication development
  • Develop integrated scientific and clinical communication for internal and external stakeholders to establish Pacira's expertise in pain management, and which underscore the medical, economic, and patient-centered value that the Pacira product portfolio delivers to healthcare providers, patients, and society
  • Participate in the scientific strategy planning process to ensure compliant integration across members of extended Medical teams, including Medical Affairs, Clinical Operations, and Health Outcomes and Value Assessment, as well as commercial partners and external stakeholders.
  • Provide insight into the development of the publication strategy and plan in accordance with clinical trial results/milestones, changes in the healthcare landscape, and identified data gaps/needs
  • Develop and implement a scientific strategy, as well as content and maintenance of the Scientific Platforms and Clinical Trials web presence for all Pacira products
  • Develop scientific communications materials as identified to advance initiatives for education and communication purposes working with internal scientific and clinical teams
  • Provide support for peer-to-peer connections
  • Provide support for Clinical Operations, including development of a product scientific communication strategy
  • Identify and engage with external Thought Leaders to gather insight into unmet medical needs and research and educational gaps
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to assess needs for training on scientific content and messaging related to Pacira products and relevant therapeutic categories
  • Lead and/or contribute to functional improvement initiatives for the Scientific Communications team
  • Create a team environment and culture which emphasizes teamwork, cooperation, personal accountability, and a commitment to quality

Interaction:

The incumbent works closely with internal teams (corporate, clinical, medical, and commercial), and vendors.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Graduate degree in a scientific discipline preferred (master's degree (e.g., MS, MPH), or doctorate level preferred (e.g., MD, PhD, PharmD)
  • Minimum of 10 years of scientific writing/communications/clinical or related experience in Pharma/Biotech industry or Medical Communications (3 years for doctorate candidate)
  • Scientific communications experience in pharmaceutical industry leading the development of internal and external scientific communications strategy and plans
  • Extensive experience working closely with health care providers, preferably in the area of pain management and or pain adjacencies
  • Expertise in external facing scientific content creation - including review and development of scientific statements/platforms and clinical publications
  • Experience in managing projects through regulatory review process and third-party vendors
  • Proficient level of understanding in drug development process, pharmaceutical business, including R&D process and objectives
  • Expertise in scientific communication strategy and clinical trial branding and initiatives desired
  • Demonstrate ability to organize, interpret, and analyze data and develop communications to diverse audiences
  • Demonstrate ability to drive and implement strategy and work closely cross functionally to maximize success of scientific communication activities
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills and demonstrated ability to critically analyze scientific literature to develop materials for communication
  • Hands-on experience with the development and review of medical content
  • Ability to translate complex medical information into clear and concise messages
  • Excellent teamwork and interaction skills to lead cross functional teams and interface effectively with internal and external partners including vendors
  • Exceptional organizational/project management skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and deliverables at once with a sense of ownership to drive to completion
  • Strong initiative, critical thinking, and problem-solving ability

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience developing and delivering presentations and publications in English
  • Proficient in conducting literature searches and deciphering medical and scientific literature and translating into effective scientific communication
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated proficiency in searching, reading, and summarizing the health care literature
  • Excellent verbal and written English communications skills including ability to communicate about technical data
  • Working knowledge of MS Office including Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Proven ability to communicate successfully with constituents at all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to work well across teams and functions
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and organization skills
  • Proven ability to work effectively on a team in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Disease and therapeutic area knowledge in postsurgical pain management and/or surgical disciplines preferred

Pay Transparency

The base pay range for this role is $171,000 annually to $235,000 annually. The range is what we reasonably expect to pay for this role. The range considers a wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to: geographic markets, business or organizational needs, skill sets, experience, training, licensure, and certifications. Depending on the position offered, incentive plans, bonuses, and/or other forms of compensation may be offered.
