Summary

IT Network Engineer II / III | Information Technology



As an IT Network Engineer II/III at APS, you help keep the systems that power Arizona running safely, securely, and reliably. This role ensures APS's communication networks are available and resilient-supporting everything from daily operations to regulatory compliance that protects the grid. Your work directly reduces operational risk, strengthens security, and enables modernization so APS can continue delivering dependable energy to the communities we serve.


What Your Day Would Be Like:



  • Design, deploy, and support network and security infrastructure that keeps APS connected and protected.
  • Partner with security, operations, and compliance teams to support audits and meet regulatory requirements like NERC CIP.
  • Respond to incidents and support oncall rotations to restore service quickly and minimize impact.
  • Manage firewall policies and network changes to balance security, performance, and business needs.
  • Contribute to modernization efforts such as improving firewall hygiene, remote access platforms, and automation to reduce technical debt.



Who We're Looking For:

Minimum Requirements

IT Network Engineer II | Information Technology



  • Bachelors' degree in Information Technology or related field
  • PLUS two (2) year of prior relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • Requires working technical knowledge gained through experience within a job area or system



IT Network Engineer III | Information Technology



  • Bachelors' degree in Information Technology or related field
  • PLUS five (5) years of prior relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • Requires strong technical knowledge within a job area or system and basic knowledge across related technical areas



Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications:



  • Knowledge of business and industry needs, as well as the technical demands; network design, installation, maintenance and operations; extensive knowledge of internet, computer, routers, switches, firewall, etc.;
  • IT security; hardware and software for firewalls; firewall installation, configuration and maintenance; various computer software applications, computer/networking hardware, standard operating systems and any other computer-related technologies
  • Skill in effective communication to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to recognize the importance of customer focus and/or of serving the needs of the end user; solve problems analytically; feel comfortable working with different teams, clients and groups of staff across an organization; prioritize personal workload; troubleshoot technical problems, including working with clients to diagnose and resolve problems; work independently and manage team work simultaneously


Major Accountabilities

1) Under general direction, responsible for the acquisition, installation, maintenance, evaluation and usage of network solutions
2) Provides basic level troubleshooting with network equipment
3) Trains users on network operation
4) Analyzes network requirements and capacity
5) Assists network and architecture design, feasibility and cost studies
6) Assists in implementation and support of the network infrastructure
7) Monitors performance and efficiency of the network
8) May help train and assist entry level employees

CIP Requirement:

This position requires Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) access consistent with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards. The applicant considered for this role will be required to obtain and maintain CIP access for the duration of employment in this position. A full seven (7) year criminal history will be obtained through the pre-employment background check process (or, for current employees, through supplemental background check process) to fulfill the CIP access requirements. In addition, this position requires an additional background check every seven years to maintain access.

Hybrid:Employees in hybrid roles work both in their home offices (virtually) and alongside their colleagues (in person).

In order for employees to build strong relationships and to promote meaningful in-person interactions, hybrid employees are expected to work about 40% of their time in-person at an APS or other (non-home office) location.



  • Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).
  • Working from a home office requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic set up.
