NRRI Organizational Job Title: NRRI Wildlife Technician - Job Code 0006 - 8352EC - $22.38-$25.55/hr

About the Job summary:

The person in this position will primarily do laboratory work extracting DNA from samples that have been collected and office work on several different projects under Ron Moen. Strong candidates should have experience with DNA extraction, be skilled in Microsoft Word and Excel, be able to follow specific directions on cleaning up data files, be able to do literature searches on specific topics, and be able to work independently.

Job Duties:

Primary responsibilities an employee must perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. List up to six essential functions of the position, indicating the most important first, and the approximate percentage of time spent on each over the course of a year. Only list duties or responsibilities that require 10% or more (equivalent to half of a day per week or 5 weeks per year) of the position's time.

  • (40% time) Extract DNA from samples collected on MnDOT Bats in Bridges project, MITPPC Terrestrial Invasives project, and the new moose project.
  • (20% time) Directed analysis of DNA data from UM Genomics Center and development of map graphics.
  • (20% time) Deploy and retrieve bat acoustic detectors and camera boxes
  • (10% time) Editing jpg images with Photoshop or Gimp
  • (10% time) Working on other projects Moen is a PI for as assigned

Physical/Environmental Demands:
Able to work in varying and sometimes harsh environmental conditions: Rain, Wind, Hot temperatures, Cold temperatures, Snow, and ability to carry up to 40 pounds in field conditions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS plus two years of experience or a combination of education and relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience to equal at least 6 years
  • Valid drivers license and able to pass a required background check and motor vehicle moving violation check (no moving violations in the past 2 years)
  • Experience extracting DNA from animal and/or plant samples
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop and/or Gimp

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. from accredited university
  • Graduate School GPA > 3.75
  • Experience deploying trail cameras
  • Experience deploying bat acoustic detectors
  • Able to use MS Office applications.
  • Experience with analyzing data using R
  • Work on a project doing fieldwork/research conducted in northeastern Minnesota.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $22.38- $25.55 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
