| Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
The department of Academic Advising contributes to the University College mission of ensuring the successful transition of first- and second-year students into the University to put them on track toward graduation in four years. |
| Primary Purpose of Position |
The Senior Academic Advisor (Sr. AA) will provide leadership for coordinating occasional advising activities or practices, including: (1) Advising programs (group sessions, orientation preparation, open House and other events), (2) Advising communication (website, advising syllabus, advising emails to new students, brochure edits, academic counseling and liaison partnerships), or (3) Advising procedures (handbook, contact sheets and other documents, advising policies, student file guidelines).
The Sr. AA will also continue to provide academic advisement to NCCU's University College constituents (first year students, sophomores and transfer students) through one-on-one meetings, workshops, or presentations regarding majors, degree requirements, academic progress, and selection of courses for future semesters. |
| Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
Excellent organizational and communication skills. Familiarity with and appreciation for the mission and structure of
NCCU programs and curricula. Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with students, supervisors, and colleagues. |
| Minimum Education/Experience |
- Requires a Bachelor's degree in counseling or related field or equivalent plus 2-3 years' related experience.
Preferred requirements:
- Master's degree in education, counseling, or similar related field required. Three (3) to five (5) years' experience in higher education advising or student services, and involvement with relevant professional associations, are preferred.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

This position will provide academic advisement to NCCU's University College constituents (first year students, sophomores and transfer students) through one-on-one meetings, workshops, or presentations regarding majors, degree requirements, academic progress, and selection of courses for future semesters. Assist students in educational planning and problem-solving, and give appropriate resources and referrals to campus support services for information and aid in making academic and personal decisions. Develop a course schedule for and with each student. Advise students about academic standards, policies, programs, and student information systems available to facilitate their success. Meet with advisees several times each semester and, in particular, after identification on early warning and mid semester grade report lists. Maintain and track general and confidential student records. |

Participate in information sessions and recruiting activities for prospective students and parents and assist with tasks related to planning and implementing the advising program. Partner with academic departments and student services. Assist the Associate Dean in developing and implementing proactive retention strategies for at-risk students and implementing general advising best practices. Attend departmental meetings and perform other related duties as assigned. Occasional work may be required beyond normal working hours. |
