Position Overview




Essential Job Duties
Dr. Breen is developing new collaborations in the field of marine mammal health. This postdoc position is required to generate pilot data for the submission of new proposals. If new projects are funded this position may be extend beyond the initial year.

The project primarily involves the comparative genetics and genomics of dolphin and sea lion health. If the DoD proposal is funded, there may be opportunity for this position to be extended beyond te initial one year period.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The selected individual will be required to develop new data in support of genetics and genomics-based research projects with an emphasis on marine mammal health. In addition to possessing a broad range of molecular biology skills, the position requires regular interaction with collaborating researchers across NC State University and elsewhere.

Work Schedule Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 6:00 pm (with some flexibility) plus evenings and weekends as needed.

  • Technical Writing: Advanced proficiency in drafting reports, white papers, and technical documentation.

  • Physical Requirements: Capable of high-stamina performance, including frequent lifting of equipment up to 30 lbs.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education


  • Marine Mammal Specialization: Expert in establishing, maintaining, and expanding primary marine mammal cell lines.

  • Molecular Cytogenetics: Proficient in karyotypic mapping using mFISH with BAC and custom DNA probes.

  • Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS): Full-cycle proficiency in WGS, from library preparation to bioinformatic variant detection (SNP/Indel).

  • Population & Evolutionary Genetics: Skilled in using WGS data for trait analysis, population genomics, and molecular tool development for species identification.

  • Whole Exome Sequencing (WES): Experienced in exome capture, NGS processing, and wet-lab validation within comparative oncology frameworks.

  • Programming & Scripting: Fluent in R, Python (NumPy/Pandas), Unix/Bash, JavaScript, Java, Ruby, and Perl.

  • DevOps & Version Control: Advanced proficiency in Docker, Git/GitHub, and AWS cloud computing in Linux/Unix environments.

  • Specialized Software: Expert user of BioDiscovery Nexus, SmartCapture, and SmartType.
