About the Department:


The mission of George Mason University Law School Library is to support the instructional, research, and service missions of the law school. Primarily a teaching and research center, the Law Library is the foremost means through which students and faculty gain access to organized information and knowledge. By fostering excellence in staff, development of the collection, and services offered to faculty and students, the Law Library performs a unique and indispensable function in the educational process. The Law Library also serves as an intellectual focal point and valuable resource for the Northern Virginia legal community.


About the Position:


The Head of Access Services coordinates, develops, and participates in the daily operations of Access Services, including, but not limited to, circulation, collection maintenance, course reserves, and resource sharing. This is a supervisory position that manages student employees, as well as one full-time library staff member. The Head of Access Services collaborates closely with colleagues across the Law Library to provide excellent resources and services to the Law School and university community.


Responsibilities:


Circulation Desk:



  • Recruit, train, supervise, mentor, and schedule 10-12 part-time student and wage employees who staff the circulation desk;
  • Manage the circulation desk in order to ensure consistent coverage and high-quality service during operating hours; and
  • Staff the circulation desk as needed.


Access Services:



  • Supervise and work collaboratively with one full-time, classified staff member on Access Services-related responsibilities and programs;
  • Develop, document, and maintain policies, procedures, and workflows on all Access Services-related functions;
  • Collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data related to circulation, resource sharing, space utilization, and wage expenditures;
  • Provide reports to library leadership as needed;
  • Serve as the Law Library expert in fulfilment module of the integrated library system;
  • Participate in oversight and planning related to library facilities and spaces, such as coordinating study room access and policies, operating hours, and library signage; and
  • Participate in marketing library resources and services and outreach to the Law School community.


Resource Sharing:



  • Manage and improve resource sharing and document delivery programs;
  • Develop and maintain a high level of knowledge of resource sharing practices and systems;
  • Serve as backup to resource sharing staff and fulfill resource sharing and document delivery requests as needed; and
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues at Mason Libraries and the Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC) to coordinate and develop fulfilment and resource sharing programs and services.


Collection Maintenance and Development:



  • Manage and coordinate maintenance of the physical library collection (print, microform, media), including shelving, stack maintenance, shifting, and other special projects; and
  • Participate in collection development by serving on the Law Library's Collection Development Committee.


Other Duties As Assigned:



  • Perform other duties as assigned including, but not limited to, serving on library, Law School, or university committees;
  • Continuously learn and grow by participating in professional associations, professional conferences, and/or scholarly activities; and
  • Potentially contribute to legal research instruction and the faculty liaison program.


Required Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in library and information science, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience;
  • Experience working in any type of library;
  • Supervisory experience or demonstrated potential to develop strong management and mentorship skills;
  • Experience with integrated library systems or resource sharing platforms;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Commitment to outstanding customer service;
  • Strong analytical ability and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively;
  • Commitment to continuous improvement, learning, and innovation; and
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and project management skills


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree, experience working in a Law Library, or experience with legal research and legal information resources; and
  • Experience with Ex Libris platforms (Alma, Rapido, Primo) and OCLC WorldShare.
