Duties and Responsibilities
The Benefits Manager oversees the day-to-day administration of the university's employee benefits programs, ensuring the accurate, timely, compliant, and serviceoriented delivery of benefits services. This role manages benefit enrollment, eligibility, vendor coordination, and issue resolution across faculty, staff, and retiree populations. The Benefits Manager serves as a subject matter expert for benefits operations and champions a culture of service excellence, leading efforts to enhance employee understanding, system efficiency, regulatory compliance, and the overall employee experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Administers university benefit programs, including but not limited to health and welfare plans, retirement plans, leave programs, tuition benefits, and wellness initiatives, with a focus on consistent, high-quality service delivery.
  • Oversees benefits eligibility, enrollment, life event changes, and terminations for faculty, staff, and retirees; ensures responsive, accurate, and employee-centered support.
  • Manages and maintains accurate benefits data within the HRIS, including eligibility rules, plan configurations, vendor interfaces, reporting, and audits to support reliable service outcomes.
  • Leads annual open enrollment planning and execution, including timeline development, system testing, employee communications, and vendor coordination, ensuring a clear, accessible, and positive employee experience.
  • Serves as the primary liaison with benefits vendors, brokers, consultants, and third-party administrators; monitors service delivery, resolves escalated issues, and supports contract management with an emphasis on service quality and accountability.
  • Develops and delivers clear, timely, and empathetic employee communications related to benefits programs, changes, and compliance requirements.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations affecting employee benefits (e.g., ACA, ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA).
  • Supervises, trains, and mentors benefits staff; sets priorities and models service excellence, ensuring consistent, professional, and respectful interactions with all constituents.
  • Analyzes benefits utilization and cost data; prepares reports and dashboards to support decision-making, planning, and continuous service improvement.
  • Collaborates with HR, Payroll, Finance, and other campus partners to ensure accurate benefit processing, aligned policies, and a seamless end-to-end service experience.
  • Participates in benefits-related audits and supports reporting and documentation requirements.
  • Performs related duties and special projects as required.

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field
  • 5-7 years of progressive experience in employee benefits administration
  • 3+ years in a senior analyst, manager, or lead role overseeing benefits programs.
