IT Systems Specialist

Position Overview
Under the direction of the Information Technology Manager, the IT Systems Specialist plays a key role in maintaining and enhancing the District’s technology infrastructure. This position supports reliable, secure, and efficient operation of network, server, storage, virtualization, VoIP, and backup systems. The specialist delivers advanced technical support to end users, troubleshoots complex issues, monitors performance, documents processes, and contributes to technology projects that empower District staff and operations.
Key Responsibilities
Customer & Technical Support
- Deliver high-quality technical support and exceptional customer service to District staff.
- Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, operating system, peripheral, and connectivity issues.
- Manage user accounts, permissions, access controls, and provide timely updates to users and leadership.
Enterprise Systems Administration
- Install, configure, maintain, and update server operating systems, enterprise applications, and desktop environments.
- Administer virtualization platforms (e.g., V Mware, Hyper-V), monitor resource usage, and perform maintenance.
- Support core services including Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, file/print, and related technologies.
- Manage storage systems (SAN/NAS or cloud-based), data organization, backups, and restore operations.
- Monitor system performance, capacity, and availability; proactively identify and resolve potential issues.
- Maintain accurate documentation, procedures, configurations, and inventory records.
- Assist with system upgrades, patching, and scheduled maintenance activities.
Network & Communications Support
- Troubleshoot LAN/WAN/wireless connectivity and support networked applications across multiple sites.
- Perform routine network performance monitoring and report anomalies.
- Install, configure, and support VoIP phones and related systems (Cisco preferred).
- Provide basic configuration and troubleshooting for Cisco switches, including VLANs, port settings, and maintenance.
Security & Compliance
- Support security operations, including antivirus/EDR, email security, content filtering, patching, and vulnerability mitigation.
- Assist in enforcing security policies and implementing best practices.
- Contribute to backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity processes.
Project & Vendor Coordination
- Participate in IT infrastructure projects, including upgrades, deployments, and migrations.
- Collaborate with vendors for technical support, repairs, and product information.
- Contribute to project planning, documentation, and requirements gathering.
Other Duties
- Perform related tasks as assigned, including work outside normal business hours for maintenance, emergencies, or projects.
- Stay current with evolving technologies and recommend improvements to enhance District systems.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience
- At least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in supporting servers, networks, enterprise applications, and end-user systems. Candidates with strong relevant experience and a growth mindset are encouraged to apply.
- Relevant certifications such as Network+ and/or Security+, Microsoft (MCSA/MCSE or equivalent), CCNA, V Mware, or cloud-related credentials.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), scripting/automation (Power Shell, Python), or modern endpoint management tools.
Knowledge of
- Windows Server environments, Active Directory, and Group Policy.
- Microsoft Office Suite and common enterprise applications.
- Networking concepts (TCP/IP, LAN/WAN/Wireless, VLANs, basic routing/switching, firewalls).
- Security tools and practices (antivirus/EDR, email security, content filtering, vulnerability management).
- Virtualization technologies (V Mware, Hyper-V) and storage/backup solutions.
- VoIP systems (Cisco preferred).
- Systems documentation and IT service management best practices.
Ability to
- Communicate technical information clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Troubleshoot complex issues, prioritize tasks, and work independently or collaboratively.
- Provide guidance and training to end users.
- Adapt quickly to changing technologies and District needs.
- Physically handle and move IT equipment (with or without reasonable accommodations).
Special Requirements
- Valid California Class C Driver’s License and ability to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance program.
- Must abide by all District policies, guidelines, and rules.
Work Environment
- This is a fully on-site position based at the District’s primary office location. Remote work or hybrid arrangements are not permitted; regular attendance at the designated worksite is an essential function of the role. The position is primarily office-based, with occasional fieldwork, travel for meetings/conferences/site visits, or exposure to outdoor conditions (50% or less of work time). Irregular or extended hours, including overtime and on-call emergency response duties, may be required.
- Prolonged sitting (up to 8 hours/day) and operation of office equipment.
- Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds, stooping, and setup of materials for public events.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and in writing.
- Sufficient hearing and vision for job duties.
- Occasional outdoor work (approximately 10%) and ability to negotiate stairs and uneven terrain.
- Primarily office-based with occasional irregular or extended hours.
- Requires independent judgment, self-direction, and the ability to interpret regulations.
- Must handle multiple priorities with frequent interruptions.
Supervision
- Receives general supervision from the Information Technology Manager.

$41.06 - $58.65 Hourly DOQ - Grade L
