Packaging Engineer II

Packaging Engineer II leads packaging and handling solutions for moderate to high complexity parts and special process routes. This role independently drives investigations, develops packaging specifications, and coordinates cross-functional implementation and supplier alignment.

Estimated annual base pay: $75,000 (minimum) - $97,000(midpoint) - $120,000 (maximum)

Key Responsibilities
  • Own and drive a defined portion of the damage/contamination Pareto (top part numbers/failure modes); lead investigations and corrective actions through closure.
  • Design and release packaging specifications for internal moves and supplier logistics, including dunnage/partitioning, corrosion control, and contamination protection.
  • Lead handling code compliance improvement: create training plans, execute audits, identify systemic gaps, and drive sustained adoption.
  • Partner with SQE to implement supplier packaging controls (pack-out specs, PO notes, audits, receiving criteria) and verify compliance over time.
  • Evaluate and mitigate risks linked to special processes and time-to-process/cleanliness (e.g., long dwell before anodization, passivation line control issues); drive process/handling changes as needed.
  • Coordinate with Logistics to ensure transport immobility and carrier robustness; address racking/load-size/weight constraints and material flow.
  • Estimate cost/benefit for packaging changes; justify investments using cost avoidance (scrap reduction) and total cost of ownership (TCO) for returnables.

  • Project Leadership - Leads packaging initiatives from problem definition through sustained implementation.
  • Technical Advisory - Acts as a subject matter expert in packaging systems, materials, and handling standards.
  • Analytical Problem Solving - Strong root cause analysis skills (8D, A3) applied to damage, contamination, and process failures.
  • Process Improvement - Drives continuous improvement through audits, training, and standardization.
  • Packaging Design & Specification - Experience creating and releasing packaging specifications for internal and supplier use.
  • Supplier Collaboration & Auditing - Ability to influence and verify supplier packaging compliance over time.
  • Risk Assessment & Mitigation - Translates packaging and handling risks into practical, shopfloor standards.
  • CrossFunctional Collaboration - Effectively partners with Quality, Manufacturing, Logistics, and Procurement.
  • Cost & Value Analysis - Estimates cost/benefit and total cost of ownership (TCO) for packaging solutions.
  • Technical Communication - Clearly communicates packaging requirements, risks, and corrective actions to diverse stakeholders.
Other Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • 3-6 years of experience in packaging engineering, manufacturing engineering, quality engineering, supplier quality, or logistics engineering with hands-on packaging/handling responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated experience leading problem solving and corrective actions (8D/A3) across cross-functional teams.
  • Working knowledge of APQP deliverables and ability to create/revise packaging specifications as part of process design and validation.
  • Formal APQP participation (new supplier launch, process change, or packaging specification development/validation) preferred.
  • Experience with packaging validation/testing (ISTA, ASTM D4169 or equivalent) and translating failure modes into packaging requirements preferred.
  • Experience with critical surface protection for machined metal parts and special process supply chains (anodize/plating/PVD/coatings/heat treat) preferred.
  • Experience implementing contamination control and cleanliness requirements (sealed packaging, clean handling, time limits, glove use, clean containers) preferred.
