Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Nursing maintains standards of the practice for nursing as defined by the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics, Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice and Nursing's Social Policy Statement.
The Assistant Director of Nursing actualizes the vision, mission, values, balanced scorecard and performance measures for Montefiore Medical Center.
The Assistant Director of Nursing participates in performance improvement/research activities; maintains professional practice standards and clinical expertise; and demonstrates leadership skills. The Assistant Director of Nursing demonstrates core and unit specific competencies based on the patient population served.
The position is responsible for all administrative issues and the coordination of fiscal, human
and other resources needed to provide patient care services within the medical center. The ADN role
models service excellence. He/she participates in performance improvement and research activities; maintains professional practice standards; and demonstrates leadership and management skills.

  • Internal Process
    Directs, coordinates, and evaluates the delivery of patient care in collaboration with
    * Organizes directs and evaluates the activities of nursing and MMC associates.
    * Utilizes critical thinking and analytical skills in problem solving and clinical decision-making.
    * Assesses opportunities to enhance positive outcomes for patients and their families.
    * Intervenes appropriately in the management of patient care.
    * Facilitates access and discharge planning. Promotes service excellence and family centered care.
    * Participates in the balanced scorecard criteria (performance improvement, customer service, innovation and growth and financial indicators.)
    Demonstrates responsibility for all administrative issues within the medical center on evening, night, and weekend shifts.
    A. Identifies actual and potential high-risk situations and
    quality issues with appropriate intervention as needed including resolution and referral.
    *. Facilitates patient access.
    * Utilizes care center criteria protocols and medical prioritization guidelines for admission, discharge and transfers.
    * Troubleshoots complex admissions, transfer process. Coordinates intra hospital transfers.
    * Facilitates access particularly in event of an ER alert and census surge.
    * Identifies patient internal transfers within the unit and cross the care center.
    * Expedites bed preparations, deploys SA as needed.
    * Coordinates timely conversion of a level 2 to a level 1 bed upon demand.
    * Co Chairs bed meeting.
    * Fosters collaboration between the admitting department manager, intensivist, attending MDs, unit/service MARs, ANMs and Triage RNs.
    * Escalates complex bed issues to the intensivist and attending with complete information required to Present issue.
    *Serves as a resource and interprets the policies and procedures in:
    * Administrative Policy and Procedure Manual.
    * Nursing Administrative Manual.
    * Human Resources Manual.
    * Patient Care Manual.
    * Fire and Disaster Manual.
    * Infection Control Manual.
    * Standards of Performance Manual.
    * NYSNA and 1199 Collective Bargaining Unit Agreements.
    Ensures compliance with regulatory agency standards. Participates in ANM meetings, administrative meetings. Budget, project and care center meetings.
    E. Establishes and maintains communication systems with ANMs and hospital managers
    F. Escalates problems to the designated Director of Nursing and/or Hospital Associate Director when appropriate.
    G. Identifies and intervenes appropriately in various administrative issues including:
    * Patient and family complaints.
    * Facilitate patient access. Coordinate admissions, transfers and discharges.
    * Consents; patient elopements, leaving against medical advice.
    * Involuntary psychiatric admissions.
    * Police intervention.
    * Ancillary department issues - specimen, transportation and reporting delays.
    * Patient emergencies, cardiac arrest, security code, fire and disaster, street calls within the Moses division area
    * Morgue issues including viewing, transport and space management, when morgue is closed.
    H. Documents administrative logs and forwards to appropriate resources/responsible managers.
    I. Participates in the employee performance appraisal process; identifies and intervenes in employee performance issues; and implements the progressive disciplinary process when indicated.
  • Customer View
    Facilitates and promotes the delivery of Patient/Family Centered Care to a divergent customer population.
    * Ensures that all associates provide customer service that is compliant with the following:

    Directs, coordinates and evaluates patient care based on assessment of data that includes: age of the patient; sensory deficits; psychomotor deficits; maturational age; biopsychosocial, spiritual, and physiological needs; patient and family response.
  • Finance & Growth
    Demonstrates responsibility for the coordination of fiscal, human, and other resources needed to provide patient care services within the medical center
    * Actively participates in the management of fiscal resources of the organization on the evening, night, and weekend shifts to promote the financial viability of the medical center.
    * Manages the utilization of staffing resources in the medical center division in accordance with unit budget and flexible staffing criteria.
    * Coordinates patient access to services to ensure appropriate patient care in a timely, cost-effective manner.
    * Supports and implements an interdisciplinary plan of care that is congruent with accepted LOS parameters.
    * Assists in reducing length of stay by facilitating discharge planning, authorizing appropriate transportation, and promoting customer and family satisfaction.
    * Facilitates the procurement of quality equipment through authorized rental or borrowing in a cost-effective manner.
    * Proactively creates capacity in conjunction with the Admitting department.

Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or related field Required
  • of Science degree in Nursing or related field Preferred
  • 1-3 years management experience Required
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral).
  • Effective management skills necessary to organize direct and evaluate the activities of patient care off shift operations.
  • Ability to apply and utilize the balanced scorecard measures (customer service, financial, innovation and growth, and performance improvement).
  • Critical thinking and analytic skills necessary for problem solving and clinical decision-making.
  • Computer literacy.
  • OHS Annual Assessment Required
  • OHS Fit Test Required
  • New York State Registered Professional Nurse License and current registration. Required
  • American Nurses Credentialing Center Certification in Nursing Administration or Advanced
    Administration Preferred
