At UC Irvine's Department of Ophthalmology and Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, our faculty of internationally recognized physicians, surgeons and scientists provide highly specialized training to future ophthalmologists, access to leading-edge clinical trials and sight-saving treatments/therapies for virtually any eye disorder.

Eye surgeons, stem cell researchers, geneticists, infectious disease specialists and engineers are working on technologies and treatments for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, corneal disease, and cataracts as well as a vaccine to prevent eye herpes infections. These efforts have vaulted UC Irvine School of Medicine into the top echelons of U.S. institutions receiving National Institutes of Health grants for vision research. Our goal is to spark innovation and continue to revolutionize patient care.


Your Role on the Team

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of industry practices and organizational policies and procedures; resolves a wide range of issues in imaginative as well as practical ways. Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Contacts are both internal and external to the department.

The Financial Analyst position will provide daily support for the financial activities of the department. Specific responsibilities include analysis, reporting, and reconciliation of all accounts and funds, financial budgeting, financial projections, payroll funding management, and fiscal open/close functions. The Finance Analyst will assist in maintaining the financial stability of all endowment and foundation funds in compliance with University/School policies and procedures. The Financial Analyst will also assist with contract and grant management, purchasing, and travel expense reimbursements. The Finance Analyst must be able to identify, analyze and help improve current processes to ensure the efficient operation of all business functions while remaining in compliance with University/School/Department policies and procedures. The Finance Analyst must be self-motivated, efficient and possess strong time management skills to adhere to established project deadlines.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Proven ability using spreadsheet and database software for complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
  • Proven interpersonal skills with peers throughout the organization; strong service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. Proven ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and manage a complex workload in an environment with changing priorities
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to function as a member of a team.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality of financial and personnel matters
  • Strong computer skills using MS Office Suite: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Experience with financial, purchasing, personnel, and payroll systems.

Preferred:

  • Thorough knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems.
  • Ability to independently gather required information to organize, and perform financial analysis assignments.
  • Proven ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
  • Working knowledge of University general accounting, contract, grant accounting, and purchasing policies and procedures
  • Experience with gift and endowment fund management.
  • Experience with pre-award and post-award management of Contracts & Grants.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting institutional/university resources.
