Job Description

The Van Goor Lab in the Division of Biological Sciences is seeking a Research Specialist I to support applied biological research focused on plant health and fungal systems. This role is ideal for someone who wants a strong entry point into the field of research.

In this position, you will:

  • Gain hands-on experience with laboratory and greenhouse research
  • Learn and apply foundational research techniques used in biological sciences
  • Work closely with faculty and students in a supportive, team-based lab
  • Build skills that prepare you for future research, graduate study, or lab-based careers

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support applied research activities by preparing biological samples, assisting with sequencing and
    microscopy, and collecting research data using established methods
  • Maintain greenhouse and plant health operations, including monitoring environmental conditions
    and identifying routine pest or fungal issues using approved practices
  • Support laboratory operations by ordering supplies, maintaining inventory, and keeping lab
    spaces organized, safe, and ready for research
  • Collaborate with students and research team members, providing routine guidance on lab and
    greenhouse procedures and contributing to a positive learning environment
  • Assist with research coordination and communication, including preparing materials for
    presentations or conferences under faculty direction
Shift

Flexible but generally 40 hours per week within Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a greenhouse, wet lab, or plant care is preferred
  • Experience in a lab, field research, or biological science setting would be helpful
  • Exposure to research techniques such as PCR or sequencing preparation
  • Comfort learning new procedures and following established protocols

Salary Range: $18 - $20/hour
Grade: GGS - 007

This is an on-site position located on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia. Applicants must reside in the state of Missouri or be willing to relocate prior to the hire date.
