Position Highlights The Fitness and Wellness Coordinator is a full time, year round role that supports the growth and development of the Fitness & Wellness program. The position works closely with staff to develop the Fitness & Wellness program, using certification knowledge and practical experience to ensure high quality service delivery. Core responsibilities include student staff supervision, training, onboarding, hiring, operations, and educational programming.

This role contributes to the success of the Fitness & Wellness program by providing high-quality, engaging, and accessible offerings. Programs include Group Fitness, Personal Training, custom Fitness & Wellness programs, wellness initiatives, and fitness certification courses. The Coordinator assists in establishing systematic, strategic, safe, and data-driven processes to grow participation and engagement in Fitness & Wellness programs. This includes customer service, facility and equipment operations, service delivery, program design, curriculum development, risk management, marketing and promotion, and assessment.

The position supports departmental and university policies, procedures, and the mission, vision, and values of Campus Recreation, representing the department in a fair, cooperative, and positive manner.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Supervision of Fitness & Wellness student staff,
    including hiring, onboarding, training, evaluation, and disciplinary
    procedures to maintain quality standards and promote professional growth.
  • Assist with the design, implementation, and improvements of the Fitness & Wellness programming and curriculum, ensuring student staff gain the knowledge, skills, and certifications necessary to deliver high-quality services.
  • Build skills and knowledge to help establish and maintain sustainable, evidence-based practices and operational procedures that support long term program and departmental success.
  • Work with the Fitness & Wellness professional staff to assess and report program outcomes, providing ongoing, semester, and annual updates on participation, assessment data, financial performance, and key initiatives.
  • Assist with the strategic relationships between Campus Recreation, the University of Arizona community, external partners, participants, and alumni to enhance collaboration and program impact.
  • Support staff quality assurance by helping to implement assessment tools to support staff satisfaction and development and ensuring required fitness and departmental certifications remain current.
  • Support facility and equipment operations, including coordinating space readiness, implementing routine inspections and audits, and managing equipment and supply purchasing within budgetary and University guidelines.
  • Assist with financial planning and stewardship, including contributing to annual budget development and monitoring expenditures to meet program targets.
  • Provide guidance to update and maintain program procedures, training materials, and operational manuals, including emergency procedures, safety practices, and risk management processes in collaboration with administration and the department risk management committee.
  • Coordinate marketing and outreach initiatives in partnership with departmental marketing staff to increase program awareness, participation, and visibility.
  • Monitor and communicate program performance, providing ongoing, semester, and annual updates on participation, assessment data, financial status, and key initiatives.
  • Deliver a high level of customer service and participant experience, fostering positive relationships with participants, alumni, and community partners to support program success and retention.
  • Support the Implementation of semester and annual program assessment strategies to evaluate market needs, participant satisfaction, and overall program effectiveness, and report findings with recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Monitor equipment and supply lifecycle and assist with purchasing, inventory, and maintenance to ensure quality, safety, security, and compliance with University policies.
  • Maintain knowledge of departmental and University policies and industry standards, engaging in professional development and required training to support program quality.

  • Knowledge of student development theory and its application to staff supervision and experiential learning.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, safety practices, and operational best practices within collegiate recreation environments.

  • Communication skills, including providing feedback, facilitating training, and supporting staff development.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related work experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience required.
  • A NCCA recognized certification in Personal Training or Group Fitness.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in Recreation, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Higher Education, Public Health, or a related field.
  • Experience supervising staff, including recruitment, training, evaluation, and the professional development of student employees.
  • Experience with program development and administration, including marketing, financial oversight, safety practices, risk management, and collaboration with campus and community partners.
  • Current Health Coaching or Wellness Coaching certification from a nationally recognized organization.
  • Specialty training and/or certifications in group fitness modalities such as functional training (e.g., F45), yoga, Pilates, dance fitness, cycling, or adaptive/accessible training.
  • Athletic performance and strength and conditioning coaching experience, including relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Olympic weightlifting coaching certifications (USAW)).
  • Experience teaching fitness certification preparation courses and facilitating in-house staff training programs.
  • Professional experience working within collegiate recreation or a higher education fitness and wellness environment.
