Location: Forbes, MN

Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opening for an Environmental Specialist at our United Taconite facility located at the Forbes Plant Site. The primary responsibility of this position will be able to ensure day-to-day facility compliance for the taconite processing plant and the active surface mine site.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Able to successfully perform both field and office work and be willing to travel between the mine and plant sites in Eveleth and Forbes.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required to communicate with employees, management and outside agencies.

  • Ability to perform permitting, contractor management, data management and analysis to support environmental compliance at the facility.

  • Maintain a reliable link between day-to-day operations personnel and the environmental department.

  • Act as a primary resource to employees across the facility for air and waste-related issues.

  • Develop and present training materials and environmental standard operating procedures to ensure operator understanding of environmental requirements.

  • Work safely and adhere to all safety and environmental compliance standards.

  • Ensure stack testing is scheduled and executed in accordance with regulatory agency requirements.

  • Manage consultants on environmentally related projects.

  • Provide guidance to facility personnel on regulatory requirements related to fugitive dust, air permit requirements and limits, and waste management.

  • Manage MPCA Title V Permits, associated plans, and all required reporting.

  • Manage the hazardous waste licenses and reporting across the site.

  • Manage regulated waste programs.

  • Oversee air-related programs such as RICE MACT, Boiler MACT, Taconite MACT, etc.

  • Able to work closely with Process Engineers to successfully execute plant and mine plans.

  • Evaluate proposed projects, modifications, or changes for permitting implications.

  • Audit inspections and recordkeeping related to air and waste programs and provide feedback to the department leadership and environmental manager regarding deficiencies or improvement opportunities.

  • Summarize and communicate performance related to air and waste compliance for internal stakeholders at multiple levels of the organization.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in science or engineering related field required.

  • Able to lead or assist in various environmental permitting efforts and associated project permitting analyses.

  • Able to regularly correspond professionally with regulatory agencies, attorneys, corporate and site management, hourly employees and contractors.

  • Possess an understanding of federal and Minnesota environmental regulations.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.)

  • Ability to manage and interpret data.

  • Strong teamwork and individual problem-solving skills.

  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner while maintaining communication with the Environmental team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Chemical or Environmental Engineering degree.

  • 3+ years' experience in an industrial environment.

  • Experience with air and waste regulations.

  • Experience with consultant/contractor project management.

  • ISO 14001/Environmental Management Systems.

  • Experience with extracting and summarizing process data.

  • 3+ years of mining-related experience.

  • Industrial Title V Permit compliance

The salary range for this role is $75,000 - $95,000. An employee's pay within the salary range will be based on numerous factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location and business or organizational needs.
