Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for an Early-Career Geotechnical Earthquake Engineer or Scientist to join our growing Seismic Practice supporting our Northern California Operations from Oakland, CA. The option to work from another office location, a hybrid or remote work schedule may be available at the Company's discretion. Our multidisciplinary seismic group supports offices across the firm by performing seismic hazard assessments and geotechnical earthquake engineering evaluations for clients in various market sectors and practice areas including dams and levees, mining and tailings storage, solid and hazardous waste management, electric power generation and transmission, buildings, and critical infrastructure. As a part of the seismic group, you'll collaborate with your seismic practice colleagues to perform deterministic and probabilistic seismic hazard analyses, site response analyses, ground motion time history development, liquefaction triggering evaluations, seismic slope stability analyses, and seismic deformation analyses, while learning the business skills needed for a successful consulting career.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Review and interpret geotechnical, geological, and geophysical data to characterize site conditions for seismic hazard and site response analyses;
  • Perform equivalent linear and nonlinear site response, seismic slope stability, and deformation analyses;
  • Compile and evaluate historical seismicity data, seismic source models, and ground motion models for seismic hazard analyses;
  • Develop ground motion time histories using scaling and spectral matching methods;
  • Perform liquefaction triggering analyses, assess consequences, and develop design mitigation strategies;
  • Evaluate and implement new models and methods for seismic hazard assessments and geotechnical earthquake engineering evaluations;
  • Prepare calculation packages and reports that document the approach, inputs, analyses, and results of seismic assessments;
  • Prepare and deliver presentations and engage in technical discussions with colleagues and clients; and
  • Conduct geotechnical and geophysical field investigations, site visits, and inspections in support of seismic instrumentation and earthquake engineering projects.


Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, earth sciences, or related field. (required)
  • Advanced degree in the same. (preferred)


Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience in seismic hazard analysis and/or geotechnical earthquake engineering. (required)
  • Willingness to learn, desire to collaborate and work as a team, and ability to be resourceful and find solutions to challenging technical problems. (required)
  • Experience with seismic hazard, geotechnical, and engineering tools such as Slope/W, FLAC, Plaxis, HAZ45, RSPMatch, Deepsoil/RSSeismic, or Strata. (preferred)
  • Field work and overnight travel. (required)
  • Health & safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing. (required)
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)

This opportunity will be posted for at least five days. Below are the potential compensation ranges that we in good faith believe are applicable for this role at the time of this posting and are only applicable for jobs to be performed in the specified location(s) below. The typical base salary range for this position is just one component of Geosyntec's total compensation package for employees. Actual compensation will be determined based on education, experience, skill set and location.

  • Minimum Salary: $73,800/year / Maximum Salary: $111,800 /year (Oakland, CA)
