  • Two years of post-secondary education or training with course work in any of the 5 GED subject areas and/or special education is required.
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.

Required Experience:
Two years of experience as instructional aide, tutor, or direct instruction.
Licensure or Certification Requirements
Ability to become CASAS certified upon hire.

Position Purpose:
An Instructional Specialist is responsible for: a) providing specialized instructional support to a department head, faculty member or other supervisor and/or b) providing direct instruction and tutoring to students.
Essential Functions:

  • Obtains, prepares, and maintains materials, equipment and supplies for student labs and classes.
  • Cleans up and organizes supplies, materials and equipment.
  • Keeps inventory records of supplies, equipment and materials.
  • Provide initial program information to prospective students of diverse backgrounds in person, via phone or email and refer students to appropriate resources.
  • Assist in orientation including testing new students and discussion of test scores or referral to advising personnel.
  • Performs variety of tasks related to student admissions, (such as applicant interviewing, registration, solving student account issues, data entry verification and updating student data).
  • Perform the full range of office support duties including word-processing, accurate filing, phone and front desk reception, processing forms, making copies, sorting mail, and maintaining inventory of supplies.
  • Works closely with faculty to determine instructor needs.
  • Assists students in completion of assignments and assists instructors in grading projects/papers.
  • Keeps detailed records.
  • May provide specialized instructional assistance.
  • Conducts individual conferences with staff and students on goals, project planning, performance, grading and problems.
  • Participates in demonstration teaching for students.
  • Provides one-on-one instruction for students taking math, reading, or writing courses using a prepared independent study curriculum.
  • Assists students with test taking and problem solving skills.
  • Orients and tests students and answers questions.
  • Diagnoses area that is causing a student difficulty and helps them with specific problems.
  • Provides additional explanation, reference materials, assignments and examples to clarify concepts.
  • Assesses students readiness to test, reminds students of test dates and assists in resolving scheduling problems.
  • Conducts test conferences and determines a plan of action for the student.
  • Provides advice to students.
  • Monitors student progress and keeps records.
  • Refers students to resources outside the department as necessary.
  • Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Statement:
Reports to and works under the general supervision of an instructor or other supervisor. A head teacher, center or lab coordinator may be available to assign work, provide priorities and troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. Work is performed independently using specialized experience and training. Work is reviewed for the quality of assistance provided.
Physical Demands/Working Environment:
This position works indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions that include office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors. Work may require sitting for two (2) to three (3) hours. This position may work independently in campus centers or labs. and may require evening work. Work Safely.

  • Knowledge in applying the principles and practices of GED preparation and Basic Skills education.

  • Assess needs of students.
