Transmission Line Engineer (Hybrid)

Halff is seeking an experienced transmission line engineer to join our growing Energy team. You have a choice of offices to be based out of located in Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, or San Antonio. This is an independent contributor role and an excellent opportunity to progress your career by applying your knowledge and expertise as we build our transmission line team. You'll likely have prior experience designing new lines, overhauls of existing lines, and substation cut-ins for co-ops, municipalities, or investor-owned utilities. You're now ready to take-on a broader role including expanding your technical capabilities, mentoring less experienced engineers, developing standards, and seeking continuous improvements to our project execution process. You may work a hybrid schedule, once the initial ramp up is completed. Travel up to 25% is expected based on project needs and office location.

What you will do:



  • Preparing designs, construction packages, and bills of material for progressively complex transmission line projects and providing engineering support to the full project life cycle from concept through construction to as-builts.
  • Driving and supporting the county, state, and Federal permitting processes for transmission projects (e.g., roads, railroads, floodplains, river crossings, Federal land and water crossings).
  • Interpreting geotechnical reports/boring logs and designing a variety of foundation types (e.g., direct-embed, pier, spread, pile) using one or more of CAISSON, LPILE, or MFAD.
  • Providing technical guidance and experiential input to all aspects of greenfield and brownfield transmission line projects, such as, routing, structure spotting, right-of-way requirements, conductor/shield wire/structure selection, and constructability/maintainability.
  • Performing QA/QC of transmission line designs and construction packages prepared by other engineers or technicians.
  • Directing, mentoring, and/or training one or more Project Engineers, EITs, Designers, CADD Technicians and administrative staff.
  • Assisting in the development of transmission line engineering design philosophies, standards, details, and specifications.
  • Continuously seeking improvements to our project execution processes, including safety by design, quality, and consistency.
  • Developing technical specifications and bid documents and assisting clients with the bid and evaluation process.


What you will need:



  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Texas (in good standing).
  • Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Civil Engineering or ABET accredited equivalent Engineering degree (Civil, Structural, or Architectural preferred).
  • 5+ years transmission line engineering experience of at least 138kV with a consulting firm or electric utility.
  • Proficient with MS Office suite.
  • Experience in PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, PLS-LITE, and AutoCAD.
  • Foundations design experience using one or more of CAISSON, LPILE, or MFAD.
  • Experience applying industry codes and standards, including NESC, ASCE, NEC, and ACI 318.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Confident interacting closely with clients, management, and design teams.

    Preferred Qualifications:



    • Multi-state PE licensure is preferred. Candidates willing to obtain licensure in additional states, as required by company operations, are strongly preferred.
    • Experience with PLS-Tower, SAG10, ArcGIS, and distribution line design.
    • Transmission line design experience with 500kV and/or 765kV line enhancements or new builds.
    • Prior experience developing design standards and/or QA/QC processes and procedures.
