Departmental Overview

Library Security protects Library Properties, Staff, and Patrons with the underlying characteristics of integrity, customer service, commitment, and enthusiasm for exceptional work ethic.

Position Summary

The position of Library Security Guard is responsible for the protection of Library property, employees, and patrons; maintaining order among the public; patrolling and monitoring activities; discouraging misbehavior and criminal activity; ensure the environment is safe and secure; writing emails and detailed reports. Understand and convey policies and procedures for patrons and resolves problems. In addition, the position will assist with training and monitoring the activities of student library employees (SLEs).

Responsibilities

  • Periodically patrols the Doe Main, Doe Annex, Gardner Main Stacks and the Moffitt Library buildings.
  • Enforce the Library Policy on Conduct, rules of Conduct in Campus Buildings, and California laws.
  • Monitor security cameras, the security access control, radio transmissions and work emails.
  • Tests security tools to ensure they are functioning properly.
  • Maintain a chronological record of security-related activities(Daily Activity Reports, Incident Reports, and emailed reports).
  • Report illegal, suspicious, criminal activity to UCPD.
  • Maintains operational control and supervision of all the student security monitors, working during the shift and for hiring, training and overseeing Bancroft student security employees.
  • Respond to incident reported, complaints reported or to any emergency situation.
  • Take appropriate action including notifying UCPD and superiors.

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent inter-personal skills for dealing with coworkers, other Library employees, regular Library patrons as well as disruptive individuals attracted to the Library.
  • Must be committed to a high level of public service as well as a firm treatment of persons who threaten the safety of people and the orderly research environment of the Library.
  • Demonstrate effective multitasking, demonstrate ability to work with a team and independently, and exercising proactiveness, demonstrate the ability to complete assigned projects.
  • Must have proficient computer skills and experience in the operation and applications related to electronic security systems, particularly the Software House, C-cure 9000 Alarm, CCTV, and dedicated camera platforms.
  • High school diploma and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Security guard state license (BSIS) and safety training certificate.
  • Certification in First Aid, CPR and AED.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $25.50 (Step 10) - $27.08 (Step 13).

  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position that is eligible for UC Benefits.
  • This is a non-exempt, biweekly-paid position.

  • This is not a visa opportunity. This position does not include sponsorship of a new consular H-1B visa petition that would require payment of the $100,000 supplemental fee.

This is a designated position requiring fingerprinting and a background check due to the nature of the job responsibilities.
