HJF is seeking a Research Assistant I to perform research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects. The Research Assistant provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff and solves less complex problems in carrying out research projects in a laboratory environment. This is the first of four levels within the Research Assistant series.

This position will be in support of Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland, Department of Surgery, Battlefield Shock and Organ Support (BSOS).

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.


  • Perform laboratory research activities including sample processing, assay execution, and data collection.
  • Conduct molecular and biochemical techniques such as Western blotting, RT PCR, ELISA, and immunohistochemistry.
  • Maintain accurate experimental records, data logs, and inventories in compliance with Good Laboratory Practices.
  • Perform data entry in a timely and accurate manner and assist with basic data organization and analysis.
  • Prepare reagents, buffers, and laboratory materials according to established protocols.
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness, equipment organization, and supply inventory.
  • Assist with preparation of technical reports, summaries, figures, and protocol
    documentation.
  • Create and communicate detailed experimental observations to senior staff.
  • Support coordination of sample tracking between animal studies and laboratory
    analyses.
  • Participate in required training and safety programs related to laboratory research.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of 0-2 years experience required

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques and workflows.
  • Experience with molecular biology or immunological assays is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and standard operating procedures.
  • Good communication and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel for documentation and data entry.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative research team.
  • Experience with the following lab equipment: Orobos O2k, Western blot, JESS
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust Clearance.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer or laboratory bench for prolonged periods

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
  • Telework may be offered on an ad hoc basis when feasible and approved.

Compensation

  • The hourly pay range for this position is $19.33-$23.00. Actual hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
