National Grid Ventures is hiring a Principal Transmission Line Engineer. This hybrid role can sit in either our Waltham MA, Boston MA, or Brooklyn, NY location.

Job Purpose

National Grid Ventures (NGV) is looking for a knowledgeable, curious, and driven Principal Transmission Line Engineer to join our Transmission Development and Asset Development Team.

This role will support all aspects of overhead transmission line development, including high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) projects, from early-stage concept development through detailed design and execution. The candidate will interface with engineering consultants, cable and equipment suppliers, permitting teams, and key internal and external stakeholders.

The Principal Transmission Line Engineer will serve as a technical leader - providing guidance, expertise, and decision-making support to management. This role will provide support to key initiatives driving NGV's growth and partnerships throughout the US.

Key Accountabilities
  • Perform, lead, or facilitate the design and technical evaluation of engineering and transmission line projects.
  • Conduct field inspections, determine cost effective solutions, and develop comprehensive engineering reports based on applicable codes, standards, engineering procedures, and safety practices.
  • Conduct engineering studies, analysis, and investigations to identify risks, recommend corrective actions and support project decisions.
  • Prepare or review project specifications, design criteria, and engineering procedures.
  • Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to deliver projects on schedule, within scope, and on budget.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to junior and mid-level engineers.
  • Evaluate and support the adoption of new technologies and innovative engineering approaches.
  • Lead technical assessments supporting project development, partnerships and investment decisions.
  • Document, prepare, and present technical findings in support of executive committee summaries, investment materials, and decision memoranda.
  • Support or lead siting, permitting, and regulatory activities including participation in hearings when required.
  • Represent NGV interests with external stakeholders, industry groups, and regulatory bodies when necessary.
  • Oversee consultants, engineers or other subject matter experts as required to augment or complement the Asset Development team.
  • Operate effectively within a matrixed environment, collaborating with individuals across NGV functions in the US and UK.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering or related technical field.
  • Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT) preferred; Professional Engineer (PE) licensure and/or a Master's degree strongly preferred.
  • Significant experience (14+ years) in transmission line engineering, preferably in EHV systems (345kV or 765kV)
  • Experience designing/engineering in multiple ISO and RTO territories.
  • Experience with transmission design software including: PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and MFAD.
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, current design codes, industry policies, regulations and market fundamentals are essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex technical analysis into clear business insight & articulate the impact of results.
  • Proven experience in project development, including developing business cases, routing options analysis, permitting, estimating and work structure planning.
  • Excellent communication skills with proven ability to persuade, challenge and build credibility based across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • High level of technical and computational literacy including handling large or complex data sets.
  • Fundamental understanding of the components of HVAC and HVDC transmission lines and assets including key asset risks, constructability considerations, and lifecycle impacts.
  • Ability to develop tools, processes, and best practices to improve knowledge and technical consistency.

Salary

Downstate NY $161,000 - $189,000 a year

New England MA $150,000 - $176,000 a year
