Position Summary

This position provides data analytics for power flow modeling and electric grid congestion management activities within the Market Operations area. This position will support and maintain power flow modeling software and perform complex quantitative analysis of modeling results to assist with congestion management and generation dispatch strategies. This position will review and assess variables that have impact on price formation and transmission power flows within the ERCOT Wholesale Market.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Support data input into modeling studies to evaluate generation and load obligation forecasts.
  • Review transmission outage information and analyze potential congestion risks that impact generation and load-serving locations.
  • Support inputs into pricing and market operations decision-making processes for observing actual or potential congestion impacts in the Day Ahead and Real Time markets.
  • Maintain analytical tools, systems, and resources for supporting best practices of congestion management in the ERCOT wholesale market.
  • Support management of power flow modeling software for analyzing potential congestion impacts.
  • Support analysis for our Congestion Management Program and facilitate submissions into Monthly and Semi-Annual ERCOT Congestion Revenue Rights (CRR) auctions.
  • Assist with ad-hoc analysis requests from Market Operations business stakeholders.
  • Participate in the ERCOT Congestion Management Working Group (CMWG) subcommittee and provide updates on potential congestion related impacts.
  • Utilize power flow or cost modeling tools and software, such as PowerWorld, PSS/E, UPLAN, or similar resources.

Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Working knowledge in transmission modeling or market operations analysis.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.
Strong skillset for performing complex data analysis and interpreting results.
Ability to work with time constraints and handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
Ability to take direction and guidance from senior analyst and leadership.
Valid Class-C Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with power flow modeling software such as PowerWorld, PSS/E, PROMOD or UPLAN.
  • Experience with database code and language, including Oracle, SQL, Visual Basic, or Python.

Minimum Education
Bachelor's degree in technical related field such as Engineering, Data Science, Economics, Business Administration, or Mathematics.
Required Certifications
Working Environment
General office environment with the ability to sit for long periods of time. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Occasional travel away from the San Antonio area for periods of up to a week or longer to attend training sessions or other business-related events.
Must be able to respond during times of market emergencies or off-normal procedures.
Physical Demands
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
If the use of arm and/or leg control requires exertion of forces greater than that of sedentary work and if the worker sits most of the time, the job is considered light work.
