South Mountain Community College (SMCC) reflects the diversity of the surrounding community, a rich mix of rural, urban, and suburban neighborhoods. Many of our students arrive from Phoenix, Laveen, Tempe, Guadalupe, and the surrounding area to attend classes at the main campus or our offsite facility in Guadalupe; we also offer evening courses in Laveen at Betty Fairfax High School.

Job Summary

South Mountain Community College is seeking a highly organized and customer-focused Fiscal Technician Senior to join our Student Business Services team. This position plays an important role in supporting student financial transactions and ensuring the integrity of fiscal processes.

  • Assist students with tuition payments, billing questions, and account resolution
  • Process receivables, payment plans, and collections
  • Perform daily cash handling and reconciliation
  • Maintain accurate financial records and reports
  • Support compliance and internal control processes
  • Use student and financial systems to manage transactions
  • Provide exceptional customer service to students and campus partners


Essential Functions

30% Provides guidance regarding routine and non-routine student financial matters; completes District required reconciliations; researches moderately complex student account issues and provides resolutions.

25% Process student receivables, payments, collections, tuition calculations, billings, and payment plans; provides front-line and phone customer service.

25% Perform daily cash count, open and close office in SIS; balance and reconcile daily business, prepare cash summaries and bank deposits; maintain accurate records; audit data entry to student accounts; download electronic reports from various online systems for review and reconciliation; review forms and documents for completeness and accuracy; create and maintain spreadsheets for data recording and reporting purposes

10% Responsible for evening coverage, including closing the office and maintaining the fiscal integrity of college petty cash funds, expense advances, and reimbursements; assists in developing and evaluating systems of internal control for the prevention and detection of fraud and irregularities, including security procedures.

10% Performs other assigned duties that are commensurate to the grade level of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of related fiscal, finance, payroll, or accounting support experience, such as processing and reconciling financial transactions.

No substitution or equivalency is allowed for the High School Diploma or GED.

Desired Qualifications

  • Higher education or government business office experience
  • Cash handling experience
  • Experience with PeopleSoft or student information systems
  • Strong Excel and financial reporting skills
  • Experience with enterprise financial systems
  • Internal employees with at least one year of relevant full-time MCCCD experience within the past two years who meet the minimum qualifications


Special Working Conditions

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, keying, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Work is routinely performed in an indoor office environment.
