Job Summary

92NY Theater for Young Audiences is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Costume Assistant to support the daily upkeep and organization of costumes during the run of our productions. This role is essential to ensuring performers are supported, costumes are maintained to a high standard and shows run smoothly for our young audiences.

The Costume Assistant will work closely with the production team and will be responsible for laundry, repairs, organization, and backstage costume support throughout the performance run.



Job Responsibilities Include

    Maintain the cleanliness and condition of all costumes throughout the run of the show.
  • Perform weekly laundry and steaming.
  • Conduct routine costume checks before and after performances to identify wear, damage, or needed repairs.
  • Complete basic costume repairs (hand sewing, buttons, small fixes).
  • Organize costume storage, dressing areas, and laundry workflow.
  • Track costume pieces to ensure all items are accounted for and properly returned after each performance.
  • Communicate proactively with the Production Team regarding costume issues or supply needs.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient costume and laundry area.


Experience, Education, & Skills Desired

  • Previous experience in theater, dance, or performance costume work preferred.
  • Familiarity with quick changes and backstage etiquette.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Basic knowledge of theatrical costume upkeep, including laundry, garment care, and hand-sewing skills to manage minor repairs.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, live performance environment.
  • Ability to follow established systems and routines while also problem-solving independently.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative attitude.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and professionalism.


Work Environment & Requirements

14 hours/week with flexibility based on performance schedule.

Availability for performances, rehearsals, and designated laundry calls during the run of the show. Ability to stand for extended periods and lift costume bins or laundry loads as needed.
