Under general supervision, performs varied and complex administrative duties requiring independent judgment and the application of established policies and procedures. May provide supervision and direction to clerical, paraprofessional or professional staff members.

Major/Essential Functions

The Associate Director for Executive Communications plays a critical role in supporting university leadership through the development of high-impact written and digital communications. This position partners closely with senior leaders and colleagues across Marketing & Communications to craft talking points, speeches, executive messages, digital content and briefing materials that advance Texas Tech University's strategic priorities. The role contributes to communication strategy, ensures message alignment and consistency, and translates complex issues into clear, compelling narratives for internal and external audiences.

  • Develop, draft and edit executive-level communications, including talking points, speeches, remarks, briefing memos, letters, emails and statements for senior university leadership.
  • Support leadership communications across digital channels, including website content, email communications, and social media, ensuring alignment with institutional messaging and brand standards.
  • Advise on communication strategy related to university priorities, major initiatives, issues management and high-visibility events.
  • Translate complex academic, research, financial and operational topics into clear, audience-appropriate messaging.
  • Coordinate with colleagues in media relations, marketing, storytelling and digital communications to ensure consistency and accuracy across platforms.
  • Prepare background materials, key messages, FAQs and briefing documents to support leadership engagements and media interactions.
  • Maintain message discipline and editorial quality, ensuring accuracy, tone and adherence to university style and brand guidelines.
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously, often under tight timelines and with high visibility.
  • Participate in planning and execution of major announcements, campaigns and institutional milestones.
  • Monitor emerging issues and provide proactive recommendations to support leadership communications needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support executive communications and broader Marketing & Communications objectives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Strong understanding of strategic communications principles and message development.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain discretion and handle sensitive or confidential information.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize competing demands.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with senior leaders and campus partners.
  • Knowledge of digital communications best practices, including web and email communications.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, clarity and consistency.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a collaborative team.
  • Proficiency with standard office and content management tools.
  • Familiarity with issues management, crisis communications or media relations.
  • Knowledge of higher education governance, research enterprises or public university environments

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in the area of specialization or closely related field. Four years of related administrative and technical experience. Additional job related education may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience working directly with senior executives or governing boards.
  • Demonstrated experience producing executive-level written materials under tight deadlines.
  • Experience writing, editing and storytelling, with the ability to write for executive and leadership audiences.
  • Experience contributing to integrated marketing or communications campaigns.
  • Experience supporting executive or leadership communications in a higher education or large, complex organization.
