Description

Flatiron Books is looking to hire a senior editor to publish 6-10 commercial fiction titles a year, reporting to the fiction editorial director. The senior editor will be responsible for acquiring and editing new projects, as well as managing their publications.

Please include a list of your acquisitions to date, as well as any titles you played a significant role in publishing.

What you'll do:



  • Acquire and edit approximately 6-10 original novels a year, as well as paperback publications for backlist titles. Be familiar with the commercial and upmarket book club fiction marketplace.
  • Report into and collaborate with fiction editorial director when needed.
  • Read and evaluate submissions from industry contacts, and provide second-reads for fiction colleagues.
  • Work closely with authors during editing process and every stage of publishing thereafter, including close collaboration on discussions of positioning, cover, marketing, timelines, and other publishing needs.
  • Be part of a collaborative team and be involved in every part of the publishing process, including contributing to marketing and publicity campaigns as needed, coordinating with art and design teams, facilitating production with managing ed
    and authors, etc.
  • Brief the cover designer on look, tone, and content of your titles; ensure the cover conveys specific positioning; negotiate all jacket concerns between art department, literary agent, and author.
  • Create sharp, persuasive, tailored pitches and selling points for every stage of the publishing process, including acquisitions pitch, galley copy, presentation to the sales force, for blurb mailings, etc.
  • Determine key selling points for all launches and convey them to the sales force, publicity, and marketing teams.
  • Be a leader and positive influence within the Flatiron Books and Macmillan teams.
  • Actively seek to expand and nurture new and existing relationships with agents and agencies throughout the industry.


What you'll bring:



  • 5+ years publishing or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of publishing workflow.
  • Familiarity with the commercial and upmarket book club fiction marketplace.
  • Excellent literary agent contacts.
  • Negotiating skills, when navigating acquisitions with agents.
  • Strong editing skills, both at the line level and developmental.
  • Ability to write galley, catalog, flap/cover copy.
  • Public speaking, i.e. when presenting titles to Salesforce.
  • Ability to work within time constraints and strict deadlines.
  • College degree or equivalent.


This role will have an annual salary of $80,000-$85,000.
