Responsible for leading/directing railcar production for Repair Center Mechanical Repair Department. Accountable for leadership of skilled labor employees including all aspects of safety, quality, production and cost. Ensures the highest quality work in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible. Provides direction and motivation to the workforce to ensure performance metrics are achieved. Ensure consistent and fair administration of employee policies and procedures.



Responsibilities

Key Activities:

    Plans, organizes and supervises shift production in accordance with

priority goals and availability of resources to ensure adequate and timely downstream flow.

  • Mentors other to ensure safe work environment.
  • Perform audits to ensure high quality repairs.
  • Accountable for production.
  • Communicates work area status/activities to the Repair Center Manager. Communicate with downstream departments to facilitate car flow.
  • Uses technical experience, expertise and problem-solving ability to achieve and maintain quality repair.
  • Maintains an effective workforce by recruiting, hiring, mentoring, managing and training employees. Administers human resource policies and procedures, e.g. staffing, attendance, payroll, performance issues, and training.
  • Ensure that all necessary administrative work is complete and accurate.

This position will interact with all employees including management, safety, human resources, quality, maintenance and corporate representatives, customers and vendors. The impact of this position on the business is very important as it ensures that daily safety, quality, production, environmental and cost goals are achieved. The person in this position will have a high level of interaction with production employees throughout the daily schedule. The decisions made by the person filling this position are of a highly technical nature in the mid-range of complexity and independent judgment as related to railcar repair. This position's primary functions are conducted in accordance with established policies and principles. This position will have a range of approximately 10-30 production employees reporting to it.



Qualifications

Education and/or Experience Required:

  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience (5 years preferred) in fast paced production

environment, preferably with a minimum of 2 years' mechanical railcar repair experience.

  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • For internal candidates only: previous experience as a facilitator in a workplace,

inspector, or experience in a work center (1-year repair; 6 months all other) preferred

  • Knowledge of Association of American Railroads (AAR) and Federal Railroad

Administration (FRA) rules and regulations.

  • Ability to lead a versatile team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, in English.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to stoop for extended periods and routinely move from kneeling to standing

positions

  • Must be able to perform overhead work for extended periods
  • Must be able to lift (vertically) up to 85 pounds from the ground surface
  • Must be able to push / pull (horizontally) up to 140 pounds
  • Must be able to climb ladders and perform work at elevated heights
  • Must be able to work in extreme temperature environments
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate, hearing protection

must be worn.

  • Must be able to physically enter confined space (rail car manways as small as 18" in

diameter) and work in enclosed environments

  • Must be able to sit/work in front of a computer for extended periods of time

Min

USD $70,700.00/Yr.


Max

USD $89,150.00/Yr.
This role may be eligible to participate in the Company's short-term incentive plan and long-term incentive plan, the details of which will be provided to the applicant upon hire.
This range is a reasonable estimate and takes into account several factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including, but not limited to, geographic location, skill set, experience, education, training, internal equity, and other business needs.
