Under the umbrella of the Office of the Dean of Students, Communal Engagement function assists in curating and cultivating experiences and designing metrics by which students develop a level of self and community identity, and learn practical life, social and professional skills that aid them through persistence, on the path toward degree attainment. This area works collaboratively, and with strategically with units across campus that focus on removing barriers to access, financial wellness, career-readiness and social mobility. |
| Description of Work |
The primary purpose of this entry-level professional position is to provide non-academic case management support to help undergraduate students develop skills, behaviors, and habits that contribute to success in college.

The Assistant Director of Communal Engagement steers student persistence and completion by actively supporting the efforts of students in target populations. The Assistant Director of Communal Engagement designs and builds collective programming to address the needs of these student communities and charts a path to campus connectivity, and development of global citizenship skills. Using a case management model, coordination of communal engagement programs includes assessing students' needs, developing beyond-the-classroom success plans, and coordinating campus-wide resources to provided higher-level support for individual needs. This role must work closely, with the Associate Dean of Student Development and professional staff in Housing and Residential Life, making connections with services such as tutoring, the university counseling center, financial aid, student health services, and when needed, outside agencies.
This position will be responsible for programmatic efforts in the development, growth and progression of target populations including but not limited to living learning communities, non-residential undergraduates rural students, and students identified through early alert mechanisms who need complex supports. Position will supervise student staff and designated student champions for these groups/programs. |
| Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position |
- Experience working with special populations and related initiatives (examples include special initiatives supported by grants or other state/federal dollars such as African American male initiatives, adult learners/rural students; second-chance students, first-generation students) in skill development and decision-making
- Strong preference given to individuals with previous experience project coordination, and restorative justice practices/processes.
- Individual must possess a strong commitment to helping underserved populations.
- Experience in managing projects with a diverse of stakeholders is mandatory.
- Moderate to exceptional experience in delivering multimodal content for small and large groups.
- Exposure to equity and inclusion initiatives linked to persistence.
- Demonstrated experience working independently, and managing sensitive data.
- Experience with applying innovative approaches when working with target populations
- Possess interpersonal skills which would allow effective communication with administrators, faculty, and students.

| Minimum Training and Experience |
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university and two years of professional experience in university/community college setting with focus on student success measures, or a community/judicial role focused on community resource coordination, needs assessment, coordination and advocacy among young adults and/or juveniles. Post-baccalaureate coursework or certificates in human development, law or restorative justice; or social work a plus. |
