Visiting Assistant Professor The Department of Art History at New York University seeks qualified candidates for a Visiting Assistant Professor position in the art, architecture, archeology, and visual and material cultures of the Late Antique and Medieval periods. The term is for one year, from September 1, 2026, pending budgetary and administrative approval, and is renewable annually for up to three years. Applications are welcome from scholars specializing in any period from c. 250 to c. 1450, whose research and teaching focus on the transcultural Mediterranean, North and East Africa, Latin Europe, or Byzantium. We seek candidates with interests in intercultural and interconfessional relations and exchange, and whose teaching can complement the department's existing strengths in Islamicate, African, and ancient art. The teaching commitment is four undergraduate courses per year, comprising a survey of medieval art, upper level courses, and an advanced seminar in the candidate's area(s) of expertise. The successful candidate will also be expected to engage in scholarship, mentor and advise students, and generally contribute to the intellectual life of the department.
