Location: New Parkland Hospital
Primary Purpose *This is a clinical role* Under general direction of licensed medical practitioner to provide clinical support skills and athletic training outreach service in a sports medicine and orthopedic practice. Secondarily, there may be opportunities for outreach that could consist of delivering community outreach/sports education programs to student athletes/parents and coaches, etc. The athletic trainer may be involved in medical coverage for athletic events/games for schools/organizations located in Dallas County. The athletic trainer may also provide assistance for selected high school sports programs or athletic clubs. Work independently as assigned, or in collaboration with athletic trainers, physicians, and other staff in delivering healthcare services for patients and athletes. Minimum Specifications Education - Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in a directly related field. - Master's degree preferred. Experience - Minimum of three (3) years of directly related experience in the field of athletic training. - Five (5+) years preferred. Certification/Registration/Licensure - Valid license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) - Certification from the Board of Certification (BOC) for the Athletic Trainer preferred. - Must have a current healthcare provider BLS for Healthcare Providers certification within 90 days of hire and/or placement in job from one of the following: - American Heart Association - American Red Cross Rescuer - Military Training Network - Preferred completed training through an accredited Medical Assistant training program or Orthopedic Technologist certification. Skills or Special Abilities - Must be able to demonstrate basic patient skills and skill in the use of supplies and assigned equipment. - Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, families, and PHHS staff. - Good critical thinking skills, both verbal and written. - Must be able to demonstrate patient centered/patient valued behaviors. - Demonstrated knowledge of therapeutic modalities and the ability to assess appropriate treatment of injuries. - Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and collaborative relationships with staff and community partners. Responsibilities 1. Performs activities related to the care of patients with athletic injury and illnesses, including prevention, recognition, assessment, management, treatment and rehabilitation, under the direction of the Sports Medicine physician. 2. Maintains accurate documentation when practicing, within scope of the athletic training license. 3. Acts as a liaison between the physicians, patient care giver and other appropriate parties to maintain effective communication and coordinate any restrictions or accommodations. 4. Schedule patient appointments in electronic medical records. 5. Patient intake and rooming. 6. Within scope of role and training, obtain patient history, perform patient triage and physical assessment for athletic injuries, and report findings to provider. 7. Document in electronic health record. 8. Assist with patient calls or questions related to athletic injuries and related orthopedic care of patients. 9. Provide patient education to include preventative, pre-operative, and post-operative education and care to appropriate population(s). 10. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact role. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to endure proper understanding. 11. Assists with the sports medicine program to ensure effective and efficient operations. Facilitates appointments for athletes and families to access healthcare services. 12. Fit injured athletes with specialized equipment and oversee the use of that equipment. 13. Apply tape, braces, and other protective devices in compliance with accepted and evidence-based practices. 14. Assists program with attaining short term and long-term programmatic goals to meet organizational objectives. 15. Helps market the sports medicine program, including the provision of information and education to patients and the community to promote services to internal and external customers. 16. Ensure appropriate integration of patient services with Parkland and the overall community, with a goal to provide optimal care to the student athletes in our community. 17. Ability to maintain and build trust; protect and preserve confidential information along with a high attention to detail. 18. Stays abreast of the latest development, advancement and trends in the field of Sports Medicine by attending local and national seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, and actively participating in professional organizations.
