Job Summary
The nocturnal MICU hospitalist is an Internal Medicine BE/BC physician who provides ongoing care to ICU patients overnight. The nocturnal MICU hospitalist ensures that patients continue to receive safe and effective care overnight. This physician must have a solid foundation of critical care medicine and be skilled in basic critical care procedures such as central line placement and arterial line placement.

*Responsible for providing care to patient during their stay overnight in the MICU

These tasks include:
* Round, with particular attention to critical follow-up assessments and plan modifications warranted by changes in patient condition
* Supervise and instruct overnight residents including staffing new resident admissions.
* Collaborate with MICU APPs
* Admit new patients personally as needed.
* Perform and supervise procedures
* Coordinate care to ensure timely transitions out of the ICU
* Respond to emergencies (e.g., Code Blue) in the ICU and elsewhere in the hospital

The MICU teams nightly census is variable but is an average of 20 patients. A CU IM resident is also performing admissions, and a second CU IM resident is providing cross cover on current patients. In addition to the in-house MICU team, a University of Colorado Pulmonary and Critical Care fellow as well as a Denver Health Pulmonary and Critical Care faculty member will be on call and available for assistance especially regarding mechanical ventilation management and advanced critical care medicine decisions.

The nocturnal MICU hospitalist will start at the Instructor rank (or higher commensurate with experience) within the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

FTE 0.8 (meets Denver Health full time employee criteria)

Full time is 120-122 12-hour shifts per year with flexibility in scheduling.

Essential Functions:

  • Follow up on patient care, discuss patient care with nurses and resolve any problems that may arise. (30%)
  • Coordinate care between different doctors caring for a patient, serve as point of contact for hospital staff and maintain communication with the patient's family. (30%)
  • Service on committees and work to help improve efficiency, patient care and infection control while fostering teamwork and improving communication between staff and physicians. (30%)
  • Serve as a working liaison between administration and physicians. (10%)

Education:

  • Doctorate Degree from an accredited medical school and completed accredited residency program and fellowship for specialist, or equivalent. Required

Work Experience:

    Licenses:

    • MD-Physician - State Medical Board Required

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures and techniques.
    • Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment.
    • Able to effectively manage and direct medical staff support activities while providing quality medical care.
    • Able to receive detailed information through oral communications; express or exchange ideas by verbal communications.
    • Excellent written and verbal communications, listening, and social skills.
    • Able to interact effectively with people of varied educational, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, skill levels and value systems.
    • Performs in a tactful and professional manner.
    • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
    • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
