What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking an R&D S&E computational scientist/engineer to contribute to multiple projects as a member of Sandia's High-Performance Computing (HPC) Systems department 9327. The successful candidate will team with Senior Scientists/Engineers and a talented group of HPC subject matter experts on leading-edge R&D, developing new technologies and approaches to solving complex problems that have Laboratory and national impact. The candidate must be a recognized leader in their field with a demonstrated record of original contributions and will be expected to carry out R&D activities with significant technical contributions while supporting the group's production computing activities. We are seeking an individual with deep experience in HPC that can represent Sandia HPC in the NNSA Tri-Lab arena, wider Office of Science/DOE community, and at the national level. The individual will serve as a resource to users and peers, line management and Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program management to achieve SNL's vision of the future for HPC.

Group 9320 has many direct-funded ASC program activities that span the Tri-Labs such as Advanced Technology Systems (ATS), Commodity Technology Systems (CTS), Common Computing Environment (CCE), and Remote Computing Enablement (RCE).. An understanding of the ASC program, Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE), and the ability to work across the Tri-Lab HPC centers supporting science and engineering applications and customers and building long-term relationships is highly desired. The selected individual will be skilled at anticipating and addressing issues that will significantly impact the organization and Sandia and be able to balance multiple activities such as HPC leadership roles, developing new concepts, redirecting approaches, and redefining customer requirements that impact organizational operations or directions.

We are seeking a subject matter expert with the skills and expertise to deliver and support state-of-the-art HPC user programming environments and apply tools and expertise to perform deep analysis for performance characterization and/or problem solving. Responsibilities are generally in support of large scientific computing platforms and the applications and users that make use of them and can range across deep technical user support, application porting and debugging, benchmarking, performance analysis and tuning, and application tool development and support.

Duties require the ability to lead multi-disciplinary, cross-organizational teams, working with line management to fulfill specific job responsibilities as well as the broad-based objectives of well-integrated HPC teams. Opportunities may also include software development in direct support of Sandia engineering/scientific codes. Qualified applicants must have the technical skills necessary to energize a leading-edge computational science and engineering environment together with exceptional productivity and customer service ethic.

*Candidates must provide a list of 5 relevant references who can specifically speak to their work and contributions within Sandia National Laboratories and beyond. These references should address the skills, knowledge, and abilities (SKA) demonstrated at a Distinguished level, which is defined as exceptional performance that significantly exceeds standard expectations.

*Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$157,100 - $267,000

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

About Our Team

The High Performance Computing Systems Department (9327) is responsible for the design, acquisition, deployment, and operations of Sandia's large-scale scientific HPC clusters and their supporting infrastructure. The department collaborates closely with 9326 (Scientific Applications & User Support) and 9328 (High Performance Computing Development) to deliver and support production HPC systems and their environments within Sandia and across the tri-labs, for use by Sandia's mission programs. To meet the high performance computing needs of Sandia's mission areas, the HPC team acquires, deploys, and operates compute platforms, networks, and storage systems in four separate security environments. The department has expertise in massively parallel computing architecture and operations; Operating Systems; high-speed file system architecture, technologies, and tuning (e.g., Lustre and GPFS); high-speed networking technologies; and computing facility technologies. A focus of the department is the creation of highly repeatable software and hardware environments to enable quick deployment and efficient operations of computational platforms and high-speed storage systems.

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
