Job Summary

Reports To: The Legislative Aide will report to the Supervisor and Chief of Staff.

The Legislative Aide (LA) assists in the day-to-day work of the Sterling District office in Leesburg, VA. The LA works with the Chief of Staff to be a front-line contact to constituents, County agencies, and any other outside entities. The LA assists with research and review of legislation coming before the Board of Supervisors. The Legislative Aide takes a leading role in communications, including, but not limited to, social media management, scheduling, and constituent relations. This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week position.

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Act as a first line of contact between the public and the Supervisor.
  • Lead office communications, including social media and e-newsletter.
  • Track and manage constituent concerns, working with County Administration or outside agency partners as needed to develop appropriate responses.
  • Track ongoing land development within the Sterling District and provide updates for district office awareness and constituent communication.
  • Manage the Supervisor's schedule, including event invitations and travel.
  • Outreach with community and key constituent groups.
  • Assist with reviewing, drafting, and analyzing legislation.
  • Attend meetings with community groups and constituents and staff the Supervisor at external events.
  • Draft, edit, and research talking points, remarks, and speeches for a variety of audiences.
  • Support the Chief of Staff with event planning and implementation of community-engagement initiatives, such as an annual Back to School Supply Drive.
  • Help coordinate with county, state, and federal agencies on matters affecting the Sterling District.
  • Develop working relationships with counterparts in other district offices and county staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
The successful candidates will be proactive and bring new ideas to the discussion. They will be comfortable working in a high-pressure and fast-paced environment. Additionally, they should be comfortable engaging with diverse people and views, as this is often a public-facing role. The ideal candidates must be detail-oriented and proficient in multitasking as they are expected to manage multiple projects at a time. Preferred candidates must be comfortable speaking on behalf of the Supervisor and able to think quickly on their feet. Candidates must be comfortable with a non-traditional 9-5 role, including working occasional weekends. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism in the office to include reliability and integrity.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Public Administration, or similar field preferred. Minimum of one to two years' experience with an elected official's office, government agency, legislative policy, or other relevant experience required.

Preferred:

  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite programs.
  • Experience with databases, website management, and Canva.
  • Spanish language fluency encouraged.

Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Full-time, with ability to reliably commute to Leesburg, VA 20177, and Sterling, VA, 20164. Hybrid/Remote work is possible. This is a political position that serves at the pleasure of the Supervisor. Employment can only be guaranteed until the end of the term on December 31st, 2027.
