Job Summary

The Engineer II supports academic initiatives for the Engineering Manufacturing Center (EMC) by executing technical projects and applying advanced engineering principles. This role is responsible for the design, fabrication, and assembly of experimental setups, testing apparatuses, and demonstration models. The Engineer II works closely with faculty, staff, and students to provide hands-on technical expertise and ensure the successful execution of engineering academic programs.

  • Manages the programing, set up, maintenance, and operation of CNC mills, lathes, water jets, and other shop equipment. Oversees the fabrication, machining, and assembly of custom components, ensuring appropriate material selection for each application.
  • Develops and updates Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings as requested using SolidWorks, Siemens NX, Mastercam, or AutoCAD.
  • Conducts and reviews engineering calculations and designs.
  • Designs and fabricates laboratory and classroom equipment in collaboration with faculty. Oversees daily machine shop operations, including equipment upkeep, material selection, and procurement under the guidance of senior engineering staff.
  • Assists the Department Chair in the development of project proposals and budgets as it relates to facilities and engineering related to current or future projects/tasks.
  • Maintains up-to-date records of training for all staff and students.
  • Provides hands-on training and guidance to students and staff. Assists in the development and implementation of technical plans for classroom instruction.
  • Supervises and mentors junior staff and student assistants, ensuring compliance with program guidelines and promoting best practices.
  • Develops technical reports and monthly/quarterly and Year End reports for the Chair.
  • Interprets program policies and procedures and recommends new and improved programs to effectively manage the laboratory administration.
  • Supervises all instructional laboratory projects, research and activities. Provides design and technical support for equipment in the instructional laboratories.
  • Orders supplies and maintains stock for the support of all laboratory and shop activities. Maintains an accurate records of the supply and equipment budget.
  • Works closely with EH&S to ensure laboratory safety. Prepares and enforces safety & security manuals. Makes recommendations on policies and procedures to the department Chair.
  • Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, storms, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering and two (2) years of relevant experience or a Master's degree in engineering.
