Position Description

The School of Art within the Texas Tech University J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & PerformingArts,invites applications for full-time, 9-month, Assistant Professor of Practice in Art Education and Undergraduate Art Education Coordinator to begin in the Fall of 2026.

The ideal candidate should be able to coordinate the BFA in Art Education program, guide students through academic and professional pathways, and contribute service to the department, university, and broader community. This position requires collaborative work with the College of Education and sustained relationships with PK-12 public schools, including participation in accreditation processes, preparation of program documentation, and engagement in state and national review cycles. Teaching responsibilities include courses introducing the field of art education, methods courses that integrate both digital and traditional studio practices appropriate for school settings, and workshops supporting art education in local and rural communities. The candidate will supervise field experiences and student teaching placements to ensure that pre-service art educators meet licensure and professional standards. The role also involves offering practice-based presentations for current teachers, cultivating professional networks with art educators at the local, regional, and national levels, and contributing to department, college, and university service initiatives.

About the Department/School/Area

The School of Art is NASAD accredited and offers the B.A. in Art (Studio Art, Art History), B.A. in Arts, Media, and Technology; B.F.A. in Art (Art Education, Graphic Design, and Studio Art [Ceramics, Digital Narrative Arts, Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture]); M.A. in Art History; Master of Art Education; M.F.A. in Studio Art; Ph.D. in Fine Arts with a Track in Art and multiple concentration options. The faculty of 34 full-time professors serve over 250 undergraduate students and 39 graduate students. Administrative and facilities support includes 12 full-time staff positions. The School of Art offers state of the art facilities in two buildings in the Art and Architecture complex and the Art 3D Annex. Major/Essential Functions

At Texas Tech University, the Professor of Practice title is used to recruit individuals with exceptional backgrounds and achievements in academic, business, government, or other professional practice. Primary responsibilities normally will be to teach in an area of expertise, mentor students in professional and career preparation, and liaise with professional contacts and entities on behalf of the department or program.

In line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

As a faculty member in the School of Art, you will be expected to:

• contribute to the mission & vision of the J.T. & Margaret College of Visual & Performing Artsand the School of Art
• mentor and recruit graduate and undergraduate students
• develop a record of peer-reviewed research/creative activity
• provide service to the school, college, and university within your area of interest
• coordinate student placements in field experiences, internships, and clinical teaching.
• supervise students in field experiences, internships, and clinical teaching.

Faculty Qualifications

• Earned Master's degree in Art Education or a closely related field, conferred no later than by the start date of Fall 2026.
• Minimum three years of PK-12 visual art teaching experience in public, private, charter, or community-based educational settings required for clinical teaching supervision (graduate-student teaching may count when full instructional responsibility is documented, in compliance with TEA clinical supervision expectations).

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

• Earned PhD, or EdD in Art Education or a closely related field, conferred no later than by the start date of Fall 2026.
• Documented experience in curriculum design or instructional leadership, such as:
  • Participation in district or institutional curriculum committees
  • Authorship of curriculum guides or instructional frameworks
  • Leadership in program development
  • Design of professional learning programs or methods courses
• Familiarity with the licensure process for pre-service public school art educators.
• Experience in community-engaged art education, museum education, arts-and-wellbeing, or place-based art education.
• Evidence of professional contributions to the field (e.g., presentations, published work, workshops, creative research).
• Teaching experience in higher education, including supervision or mentorship of pre-service art educators.
• Experience developing innovative curricula or multimodal art-education projects that integrate emerging technologies.
• Documented service to professional organizations (e.g., TAEA, NAEA) or collaboration with schools, museums, nonprofits, or cultural institutions.
