The Systems Engineer II completes system installation and management, system monitoring and performance tuning, diagnostics and troubleshooting, user support coordination, backup and storage management, data center maintenance, infrastructure upgrades, and other related tasks.
Job Description Typical duties include but not limited to:
- Assists in design, development, support and maintenance of systems infrastructure.
- Completes system installation and management, system monitoring and performance tuning, diagnostics and troubleshooting, user support and testing coordination, backup and storage management, data center maintenance, infrastructure upgrades, and other related tasks.
- Administers application security and configurations.
- Ensures data/media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operations.
- Conducts routine infrastructure and security audits to ensure compliance with established standards, policies, and configuration guidelines.
- Monitors and maintains continuity with system licensing and maintenance agreements.
- Serves as an escalation point for IT User Support Specialist and Systems Engineer I.
- Tracks problems in the work order system.
- Maintains records, forms, and standard operating procedures documentation.
- Develops new techniques and procedures to enhance university systems infrastructure.
- Reviews processes, evaluates results, recommends new processes, and promotes best practices.

- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Additional Job Description Required Qualifications:
- This position requires either seven years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field and three years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
- Professional full-time experience with enterprise systems and applications and current versions of Windows Server and Linux or other enterprise services.
- Experience with large enterprise computing environments that include multiple site locations.
- Experience with Identity Management, Disaster Recovery procedures and domain administration.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Five years professional, full-time experience with application system support and implementation in a medium to large computing environment.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Knowledge of basic networking concepts (e.g. Systems, Protocols, Directory Services).
- Knowledge and proficiency with relevant business systems, operating systems, and servers.
- Knowledge of and ability to administer local and cloud based applications (SaaS) such as Azure/AWS and/or Office 365.
- Skill in shell scripting/automation, project management of small initiatives, and troubleshooting.
- Skill in managing servers and storage hardware.
- Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
- Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in various situations when numerous and competing demands are involved.
- Ability to collaborate and work effectively within the community and willingness to contribute to a team effort.
- Ability to work independently and follow through on project assignments.
- Ability to provide professional customer service and act as a customer advocate
