Under general supervision of the Communication Services Supervisor, within the Student Disability Center (SDC), caption or provide verbatim Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in degree-related instructional activities. Provide communication link between the deaf or hard of hearing students and the instructor by transmitting/transcribing/captioning classroom lectures and other auditory information using simultaneous on-site or remote captioning. Work in collaboration with other captioners to develop knowledge of technical terminology and add to dictionary. Participate in Communication Services Provider staff meetings. Assist with various related projects or individual projects as assigned during non-captioning worktime. Maintain records of hours worked and time sheets. Provide information to faculty and staff members regarding the role of the captioner.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
- Graduation from high school and 60 semester units or 1200 hours of postsecondary captioning experience, proficiency in spoken and written English, completion of a court reporting or stenography training program.
- At least 3 year of real-time captioning, court reporting and/or stenography experience.
- Experience providing captioning/cartCART Services required by deaf or hard of hearing students in degree-related post-secondary instructional activities or court reporting experience.
- Knowledge of captioning/CART software.
- Skills to use a stenographic machine, computer, and other technology necessary to provide on-site or remote captioning or CART.
- Skills to provide captioning/CART with the speed and accuracy needed for post-secondary.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of consumers and awareness of deaf and hard of hearing communication norms.
Preferred Qualifications
- California Court Reporters Association (CCRA) CCGRC (California CART Generalist) or CCS (California CART Specialist), or National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) CRC (Certified Realtime Captioner) certifications or Registered Professional Reporter (RPR).
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent documented experience and training.
- A combination of formal training from a court reporting school or in stenography methods and relevant documented real-time captioning experience to demonstrate the appropriate skills for the level of assignments.
- Knowledge of student support services and resources; skills to refer deaf or hard of hearing students to appropriate professional support member of the SDC Disability Specialists team.
- Skill to use, add to, and maintain captioning dictionary.

The Student Disability Center (SDC) within the division of Student Affairs oversees the provision of academic accommodations, adjustments, and services for approximately 4,500 disabled students to facilitate equal access to the University's educational programs. Work Environment
- UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.
- This position requires daily on-site presence M-F and occasional weekend assignments with only periodic remote work. Position is subject to furlough between July 1 and August 31 each year. Adjust schedule to provide CART/Captioning services as needed and assigned. Schedule is subject to change with only 12-24 hours notification. Work flexible schedule including hours outside standard 8AM-5PM schedule. Work occasional overtime, evenings/nights, and/or weekends as needed, usually on short notice to meet operational needs. Work occasional varied lunch hours. Attire appropriate to captioning situation is required.
