Position Purpose
The Fire Safety Tech III (Fire Alarm Systems) must have skills and knowledge in all aspects of the maintenance and repair of life safety systems including fire sprinkler systems .Identifies fire alarm system problems, troubleshoots, and makes repairs. Performs a variety of tasks involved with testing, maintaining, installing, analyzing, and repairing all types of life safety systems. Maintains a working knowledge of fire suppression systems and kitchen hoods.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • High School graduate or equivalency
  • Must have at least four years of relevant experience.
  • Must have a valid driver license and be able to qualify under the terms of the Dartmouth Approved Driver policy.
  • Ability to identify and install fire safety system parts.
  • Experience with fire safety systems; ability to identify fire alarm system problems and have the knowledge to troubleshoot and make repairs.
  • Basic knowledge of the life safety codes.
  • Strong knowledge of testing systems.
  • Ability to use filling station to recharge extinguishers.
  • Knowledge of fire suppression systems such as fire sprinkler, tamper, flow switches etc.
  • Ability to follow detailed schematics and wiring diagram blueprints on all equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge of testing systems.
  • Knowledge of AV systems
  • Knowledge of NFPA 10, 13, 25, 70 and 72
  • Extensive knowledge of life safety codes.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to apply all relevant local and national codes and safety regulations related to the installation, operation and maintenance of life safety systems.
  • Skill in the use of alarm system repair and testing tools and equipment such as signal generators and voltmeters, soldering irons, screw drivers, wiring tolls and similar.
  • Familiarity with detailed programming of fire safety systems.
  • Computer skills related to troubleshooting and programming fire alarm panels or reading pm work (Bird Dog inspection system/Asario preferred).
  • Must have the ability to follow complex written and oral assignments and communicate effectively.
  • Must be able to work independently under minimal supervision, exercise sound judgment and have excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to work overtime as required.
  • Strong customer service orientation.


Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates:

  • Driver Safety- Electrical Safety related work practices
  • Lock-out/tag-out
  • Respirator training
  • Fit and Physical Examination
  • Working in confined spaces
  • Laboratory safety/hazardous waste management training
  • Asbestos awareness training
  • Bloodborne pathogen training

Description
Responsibilities


  • Regular testing and maintenance of fire alarm, annunciation and detection systems including assessment and troubleshooting of components and systems.
  • Aligns, adjusts, and calibrates equipment according to manufacturer's specifications.
  • Replaces defective wiring including fire alarm system parts such as pull stations. Replaces smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, horns, and strobes.
  • Plans working details and follows schematics, wiring diagrams or blueprints on all equipment and systems.
  • Sets up and monitors public address systems for special events, sporting events and other functions, many of which are during off-hours.
  • Tests faulty equipment and applies knowledge of functional operation of life safety systems to diagnose cause of malfunction.
  • Tests electronic and mechanical components and performs system testing and analysis in order to locate defects.
  • Uses filling station to recharge fire extinguishers.
  • Aligns, adjusts and calibrates equipment according to manufacturer's specifications. Calibrates testing instruments.
  • Maintains records of repairs, calibrations, and inspections.
  • Supports Red Tag permit system, for sprinkler systems and fire protections.

Learn from Fire Safety Technicians III (Sprinkler) and IV via working with and understanding procedures:

  • For example, receive clear and concise instructions from coworkers; be educated accepting constructive input from coworkers performing work.
  • While performing maintenance work learn the procedures being taken and the reasoning behind the action.
  • Under direction, assists with testing, maintenance and troubleshooting of fire safety systems.
  • Aligns, adjusts and calibrates equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations.

Mentorship

Works with and mentors Fire Safety Techs I and II, explaining the procedures being performed and the reasoning behind those actions.

  • For example, provide/receive clear and concise instructions to coworkers; educate/be educated offering constructive input to coworkers performing work.
  • While performing maintenance work learn the procedures being taken and the reasoning behind the action.
  • When qualified, allow the technician to perform the work under supervision.
