THE POSITION

If so, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is eager to welcome a diligent Safety Specialist 1 to play an instrumental role in the administration, training, and management of safety programs across our district and county operations. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Safety Specialist 1, you will be responsible for observing, inspecting, and assisting with providing safety-related guidance to district and county personnel; conducting safety related trainings and seminars; and performing field and facility inspections. You will also provide vital technical assistance and perform administrative work in support of the safety program.

Specific functions will involve assisting with providing recommendations and resolutions for safety concerns and providing recommendations to reduce accidents and personal injuries. In addition, you will participate in the process of evaluating Safety Innovations provided by employees and help to determine compliance with current policies. You will further utilize your skill and judgement to determine if a worksite is unsafe, consult with county and district management staff, and provide detailed reports summarizing remedial actions.


Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Oil City. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.   • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Safety Specialist Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Five years of technical experience in conducting safety inspections, safety investigations, or safety training, or performing technical highway maintenance or highway construction work; or
  • One year of technical experience in conducting safety inspections, safety investigations, or safety training, or performing technical highway maintenance or highway construction work, and a bachelor's degree in Safety Management, Occupational Safety and Health Management, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position is required to obtain an active Advanced Safety Certificate issued by the National Safety Council's Safety Training Institute within two years of starting in this job.

Other Requirements:

  • This particular position also requires possession of a current driver's license which is not under suspension.
