Outside Plant Lead Technician

Job Summary

The OSP Lead Technician is responsible for overseeing the installation, splicing, testing, and documentation of fiber optic infrastructure in outdoor and data center environments. This role leads a team of technicians, ensures adherence to safety and quality standards, and supports project delivery by coordinating work activities, maintaining documentation, and communicating effectively with stakeholders. The position requires extensive travel, outdoor work in varying weather conditions, and strong technical proficiency in telecom installation practices.

Job Responsibilities




  • Lead and supervise a crew of 5-10 technicians, providing guidance, support, and performance oversight.



  • Perform installation of innerduct systems, including Maxcell, Microduct, and other conduit types, along with fiber optic cable placement in data center and outdoor environments.



  • Execute fiber splicing, testing, troubleshooting, and termination activities.



  • Read and interpret blueprints, design documents, redlines, and cable schedules.



  • Ensure all work meets established safety, quality, and production standards.



  • Maintain jobsite cleanliness and exhibit high-quality workmanship.



  • Coordinate with project stakeholders to address obstacles and support project progress.



  • Provide structured feedback and updates on project status.



  • Track lessons learned and support continuous improvement initiatives.



  • Review and track timesheets for assigned crew members.



  • Maintain orderly project documentation and support project closeout requirements.



  • Communicate effectively with foremen, leads, technicians, and superintendents.



  • Operate company vehicles safely, including pulling and backing trailers.




Job Requirements




  • Proficiency with basic telecom hand tools.



  • Ability to lead midsize to large projects and manage service work.



  • Strong understanding of jobsite safety practices and requirements.



  • Ability to read and understand project design documents.



  • Experience installing various innerduct types and fiber optic cable.



  • Skill in dressing, terminating, splicing, and testing copper and fiber cabling.



  • Ability to troubleshoot both copper and fiber systems.



  • Capability to maintain accurate paperwork and documentation.



  • Experience coordinating QA/QC activities and participating in quality status walks.



  • Knowledge of project closeout processes.



  • Ability to identify strengths and development needs of team members.



  • Ability to blow fiber optic cable.



  • Valid driver qualification for operating company vehicles.




Work Experience




  • Previous experience leading field technicians in telecom, fiber installation, or related infrastructure projects is required.



  • Demonstrated experience in fiber splicing, testing, and installation in outdoor or data center environments.
