Position Overview




Essential Job Duties
The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering ( BAE) is jointly administered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences ( CALS) and the College of Engineering at NC State University. The department actively contributes to the academic, research and extension missions of the University.

The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at North Carolina State University invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral research associate to work with Dr. Joe Sagues, Assistant Professor, in the area of process modeling and techno-economic / life cycle analysis ( TEA/ LCA) of industrial bioprocessing technologies.

The position will focus on bio-electrochemical conversion of CO into formate and N into ammonia as part of the Novo Nordisk Foundation ( NNF)-funded Biocatalyst Interactions with Gases project.

The position is expected to begin on January 2026, with an initial one-year appointment and the potential for extension based on performance and funding availability.
The postdoctoral research associate will:

  • Conduct process modeling and TEA/LCA of industrial bioprocessing systems with a focus on gas biocatalysis.
  • Collaborate closely with faculty, research staff, and graduate students at NC State and partner institutions to develop cross-disciplinary solutions.
  • Prepare manuscripts, presentations, and reports that communicate technical findings to academic, industry, and funding stakeholders.
  • Contribute to broader research initiatives in bio-electrochemical systems, carbon utilization, and sustainable nitrogen management.

Requirements and Preferences






Work Schedule Monday - Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, with early mornings, evenings and weekends as research needs require
Department Required Skills

  • PhD in chemical engineering, biological engineering, agricultural engineering, environmental engineering, or a closely related discipline by time of hire.
  • Demonstrated research experience in process modeling, TEA/LCA, or industrial biotechnology.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse, interdisciplinary team of engineers, biologists, and chemists across academia, industry, and national laboratories.
