Position Overview
The School of Education and Human Sciences (SOEHS) is seeking to fill a Student Recruiter position for the Lawrence campus. The successful candidate will need to be able to work independently, have excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. This position will be responsible for designing and implementing the School's recruitment activities for undergraduate programs. Working in a dynamic environment (both on-and off campus), this position will generate a recruitment strategy, communicate daily with prospective students and parents in regards to admissions, academic program selection and scholarship eligibility, financial aid, housing and residency requirements, and work with high school and community college counselors. This position will assist in developing recruiting materials and resources for recruitment efforts, conduct presentations, lead admission workshops, receptions, and special events along with collecting and analyzing data to grow future outreach efforts to be competitive. This position will also manage the SOEHS Student Ambassador program, supervise a GA Recruitment Coordinator, and provide additional undergraduate recruitment trainings, as needed.
This is a full-time, twelve-month, benefits eligible, regular appointment reporting to the Assistant Dean of Student Success. This is a hybrid position based on the recruiting calendar.
Job Description
60% - Student Recruitment Strategy and Management for SOEHS
- Develops a recruitment strategy by reviewing and analyzing data. Independently manages recruitment programming for undergraduate programs in the SOEHS.
- Provides advising, counseling and education services to assist prospective students and parents with admissions requirements, academic program selection, and next steps for admitted students (housing, financial aid, etc.).
- Serves as a liaison, resource and contact person for KU Admissions Representatives in matters pertaining to SOEHS undergraduate programs, including for scheduling or drop in visiting of prospective students and families. Coordinates with faculty for tours of facilities, as needed.
- Plans, coordinates, and executes larger and smaller scale recruiting events, on- and off-campus. Develops and leads admitted student reception(s) and special events for undergraduate student recruitment.
- Develops effective relationships with department Chairs and directors, academic and program coordinators and advisors, admissions, and financial aid. Serves as a liaison with university level recruitment offices, including attending meetings with the Office of Admissions.
- Communicates with prospective students and families, as well as high school and community college counselors. Supports transfer students with questions pertaining to SOEHS undergraduate programs and makes referrals to Academic Success Navigators or other resources as needed. Provides KU and SOEHS resource information to inquiring schools and agencies.
- Develops a strong knowledge of undergraduate programs and admission standards. Serves as a subject-matter expert on recruitment for the SOEHS.
- Participates in recruitment activities, including traveling to high schools, community colleges and other learning institutions or pre-professional partners to recruit students. Identifies new opportunities for connection both on and off-campus, hosting groups on campus and visiting pre-professional partners. Attends recruitment events that are managed by the Office of Admissions.
- Develops recruitment schedule and necessary travel itineraries.
- Manages a recruitment budget.
- Provides support and training to SOEHS faculty and staff in matters related to student recruitment, data management, and transfer credit resources, including updating community college transfer guides. May provide consultation to the managers on overall recruitment tactics, including programming, recruitment strategies, publications and presentations.
- Tracks data on recruitment activities and events to evaluate the effectiveness of recruitment strategies and determine needs for additional efforts.
- Initiates, plans and executes special projects, such as targeted recruitment efforts for high need undergraduate programs, in conjunction with unit goals and objectives.
- Tracks data on application, admit, and deposit totals for SOEHS undergraduate programs. Provides regular updates to relevant SOEHS Deans and Department Chairs.
25% - Supervision and Training
- This position will supervise the SOEHS Student Ambassador team and collaborate with the SOEHS Welcome Center. They will have the specialized responsibility of developing training materials, hiring new ambassadors, conducting trainings, and evaluating progress. They will look to help the ambassador team develop professionally and work collaboratively. They will also serve as the point of contact for SOEHS staff and faculty who request to assign projects to the Student Ambassadors.
- Supervises GA Recruitment Coordinator. Responsible for hiring, training, and evaluating the GA's progress.
- Provides additional training and opportunities in undergraduate recruitment to other student worker(s) in the Dean's wing, as needed.
10% - Collaborates with SOEHS Marketing Coordinator
- Collaborates with the Marketing Coordinator to develop materials and resources to recruit prospective students, including in areas of print materials, website design and content as it relates to the KU admissions process.
- Creates and manages correspondence, including email and mailing campaigns for prospective and admitted students with feedback from the Marketing Coordinator.
- Collaborates in the planning of social media content to attract prospective students.
5% - Other duties as assigned
- May collaborate with the SOEHS student retention team to support the successful transition from prospective students to enrolled students.
Position Requirements
- Valid driver's license at the time of appointment and maintained throughout employment.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- At least two years of experience with recruitment, admissions, advising, and/or related work in higher education OR minimum of five years of experience in education, customer service, or related field.
- Excellent communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
- Experience working with a wide range of groups of various levels within an organization, as demonstrated by application materials.
- Experience working independently and with little supervision, as demonstrated by application materials.
This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have advanced knowledge, analytical skills and professional competencies necessary to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is commonly recognized as the standard qualification for similar roles in the public and private sector, ensuring that the university remains competitive with industry aligned practices, enhances collaboration with external partners, and supports the delivery of services and programs that meet professional and market-driven expectations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Higher Education or a related field.
- Familiarity with KU and the School of Education and Human Sciences.
- Experience with recruitment, admissions, or advising.
- Experience with recruitment and/or admissions systems (Slate, etc.)
